Reliced acoustics? What is next a Willie Nelson model with a hole in it?

I don't like the look either. I think it would be pretty dumb for someone to buy something like this as a way of looking like they'd spent more time on their instrument than they actually had. But it's just another aesthetic choice like EVH stripes or pointy black everything. And maybe some people would feel more comfortable playing an instrument that isn't visually flawless, too. I remember being a teenager and feeling pretty intimidated whenever I went into the expensive acoustic guitar sections of my local stores, even though I dragged my dad's old Alvarez to school with me all the time.

I thought about this too. It HAS to be purely an aesthetic choice. Surely no one is buying them to try and fool other people into thinking they did the wear and tear themselves. I have a hard time accepting that. It’s just too…sad lol.

I was in the music store Sunday, that is where saw the reliced Martin. They had some reliced Strats that were beautiful. They would have been even if not reliced. However, 5K for any Strat is ridiculous. I can't get my head around not liking a guitar because it is reliced. It is just a finish, it would get akin to not liking enamel or poly. Or graphic designs. For me it is first about the feel of a guitar, then the sound, if it passes those tests I don't really care about the finish unless it is something extremely hideous.

I'm not saying you're wrong or that I don't agree with you... but I feel like you're the minority.

Most people go by what a guitar looks like. I mean, it's the first impression almost anyone has of a guitar.

I never got the relic thing, but hey, most people would hate the guitars I love, so to each their own. I wonder why there are no relic amps, though. Torn old-looking Fenders and Marshalls would sell. And SD has the relic'd Antiquity, although the Antiquities I ordered look brand new.

Feel, ergonomics, and playability are all primary factors for me, but so are aesthetics. If I absolutely hate the look of a guitar, I don't care how great it sounds, I won't buy it. It will not bring me joy to have an ass-ugly guitar on my rack or to play it at home or onstage. Looks aren't the only criteria, of course, but they do play a role, and I would submit that most guitarists have the same underlying aesthetic preference, even if they pretend not to.

Like I said if it is hideous it is staying in the music store. However, if I picked up a Strat, Tele or Les Paul and it played like a dream and the price was right, I would not care if it was reliced.

I would have no problem playing this guitar. I would have a problem paying 5K for it.

Whether electric or acoustic, the relics aren't for me. I suppose I get the original appeal was to aesthetically emulate the road worn guitar - the instrument that had that "mojo" and its musician could spend days telling stories of their years touring together - but it didn't take long for the aesthetic to evolve into instruments that resembled abused instruments. Either way, it's an aesthetic choice that I always felt was disingenuous, but it's not like I was ever forced to buy one.

So when you say you wouldn't play it if it was "hideous," you are making a decision based on aesthetics. As do all of us. :)

Relic'ed guitars look hideous to me, so it wouldn't matter how well it played. I would not buy one.
