This is my JB. Should I trash it?!

Hi there.
I put a JB on the bridge of my Strat but it sounded like crap.
I posted a thread on this forum and in the end I realize that my JB might be ready for the bin :wrf:
I've gently removed the tape and this is how it looks like.
Can you tell me if it's in parallel or series?
Can you also tell me IF and HOW I can try the single coils one by one to see if one of the two is dead?
Thanks a lot!

Re: This is my JB. Should I trash it?!

You didn't need to remove the tape to check it. You need a multi-meter, specifically an ohm meter to measure the resistance of the coils. You can do that by tying the red and white wires together and measuring from the black wire to the green wire, it should read around 16K ohms (anywhere between 15K - 18K should be fine). If it is a lot higher you have an open coil, if it is alot lower you have a shorted coil. You can find that by measuring from the red/white wires (tied together) to the black and from the red/white to the green, each of those measurements should be around 8K.

As far as the series or parallel goes, that depends on how you wire it up, not how the pickup is wired inside.

I'm an idiot :dot:

Yeah they all tend to look that way when you take the tape off

What to say... I'm a curious guy.
Wait... let's see how the TV works...

Well, you can only learn how things work and are put together one way... take them apart. Just tape it back up and send it to me for further examination! :)

I would, but I live in Sweden. Too much of an effort.
But I'm meeting a friend with a multimeter in 15 mins, news soon.

red/white to green 8.06
red/white to black 8.14
black to green 16.20
From now on, I'm in your hands. PLEASE HELP!

Re: This is my JB. Should I trash it?!

The red/white section should be soldered together for full humbucking mode. If you don't want to split the coils at all then these can be taped off. The green and bare wire are joined and soldered to ground (the back of a pot usually) and the black goes to the pickup selector switch if its strat type guitar.

It might also be good for you to post a picture and/or a diagram of how you want the guitar wired up.

Looks fine to me. Have you ever tried a JB pickup before?

Unfortunately not. I use a Tele with a PG on the neck and Rails on the bridge to play bluesy stoner rock and a Strat to play post rock using the only the coil on the neck. I wanted to install the JB on the bridge to use it as back up guitar for the stoner project. I didn't choose the JB. It was included in the deal when I bought the PG. The wiring is right. I guess the JB doesn't kick ass, even if it's a humbucker.
I'm gonna wire it again and close the guitar, put strings on, intonation and then try it with the big amp. Now I'm using the Mini3. I'll get back to you.

Re: This is my JB. Should I trash it?!

It kicks ass, i garantee. How did you connect the leads (black and green) to the pots/switch? What did you do with the ground wire?

IT WORKS.

Now I have to fix the bridge because I removed from the guitar to set it on fire before installing the JB. Now it works. The volumes are the way it should be. I fix the bridge and hopefully enjoy the kicking ass you're talking about.
