This little bastard really boogies!

Raging BB Gunologist
Borrowed a Rectoverb 25. I wanted to put it through it's paces before I committed to buying one. Throughly impressed. I thought the combo would sound weak and boxy, but it's not. It pounds pretty hard.

I can get it to sound more or less like my big Recto, minus the obvious difference in headroom and low end extension. I get a surprising amount of thump for a small 1x12 and the open back gives it a seriously sweet crunch at the expense of pure chugging, where I feel a closed back is better suited.

Where the combo really shines is when I roll the gain back. The cab/speaker has a ballsy midrange and transient harmonics that gives a certain authenticity to old school guitar tones that the more modern sounding Recto cabs lack. The Fillmore speaker kind of reminds me of a Greenback, although with a more Mesa sounding midrange and better bottom end control. Best slide tone I've had to date.

I've noticed that as I experiment I find myself playing a lot of ZZ Top, Zeppelin, Nazareth, AC/DC...

Great amp. It took me a while to really get it dialed in, the that was more because my ears were accustomed to Vox AC30 tones. Once I worked out (or let myself see) that it was a case of apples/oranges, I learned how to make it work for me. The trick on Channel 1 is the mid-control, and on channel two, the interplay between gain and treble.

The only downside I've found is the inability to see settings on a dark stage, thanks to the chrome on chrome knobs. I swapped them out for Lonestar style white knobs.

That's cool. It's good to have a little grabngo combo that's similar to your big "real" amps. I just scored an old Orange AD15 for that exact reason. Which reminds me, i should start a thread on that...

Re: This little bastard really boogies!

Cool. I kinda have the same thing going with my old Boogie .50 cal + head and then the little Subway Rocket 1/10 combo i have. Run the same pedal board with both and use which ever one fits the room.

Re: This little bastard really boogies!

Boogies can be tough to dial in at first; the controls do interact more than other amps I think. Once you find the sweet spot, there's nothing like 'em!

Re: This little bastard really boogies!

When the Mini-Rec head came out, I was blown away. I'm not a metal player, but that amp had enough versatility that I could easily see using one. I liked that it had an efx loop where the TA-15 didn't. Not my cup of tea exactly, but a little different from what I had, so kept my eye out for a used one.

But, I stumbled into a deal on a practically brand new Mark V:25 full stack, and jumped on that. Killer deal and a better fit for me. Still, the Mini-Rec Reverb combo looked really interesting, and was even more intrigued after I played one.

But fate intervened AGAIN, and I found another fantastic deal on a month-old Mark V:35. Didn't really need this one, but too good to pass up. Really happy with it. Used it for an outdoor gig last Saturday on top of a Mesa 112 Thiele cab and it was perfect.

Two weeks ago a Mini-Rec Reverb popped us on my Craig's list, but I've blown my budget for the year, so I had to pass. (DARN!) It's on the back-burner for now, but one will probably come up again.

The Mini-Rec and the Reverb combo would be good choices for a lot of players, whether you play metal and hard rock, or lean more towards classic rock and blues. Lots of features, and TONE....good cleans and a wide range of gain.

NAD. Wound up buying the amp. After bringing it home and getting to play it again I know I've made the right choice. Pretty excited to have something that's this small that sounds this good. I'm really digging the open back sound... much more than I thought I would.

I'm thinking about selling some gear off and getting a second combo so I can go stereo. I think that'd be pretty sweet.

It's been a long time since I've only needed one trip to the truck.

That looks like a great rig. Now I have a second NAD thread to look forward to when you do go stereo.

CONGRATZ on a killer little amp - very glad to hear you like it sooo much.

PS : PRS ? . . . when did this happen ?

I got bored. Went to check out an SE Custom 24 to try to break myself out of a rut. Wound up playing the McCarty leaned against the amp and it spoke to me.

The coil taps on it are awesome. It's kind of like having a Les Paul, Strat neck and Tele bridge in one guitar, and it's fatter sounding than my Les Paul.

The black Standard 24 is all mahogany and has an HFS in the bridge, so better for drop C#. The coil taps on it are kind of trashy, which turned out to be pretty cool when driving a high gain amp channel.

. . . no bloody way ! Fatter than a Les Paul. Never knew there is something fatter than a Les Paul.

Great so see it is not just the vocalist (Chris Robertson) from Black Stone Cherry that can move away from his sexy Les Pauls, to PRS's.
I think he now use PRS guitars exclusively. And he used to be the biggest LP Fan out there.
