This might be a stupid question......

Just got a SH2 & a TB6 to replace the Dimarzio AN & TZ in my RG1570. It's your standard HSH 5-way switch config.

Here is where my confusion/question begins....in the wiring diagram from the Ibanez site has the R/W going to the switch & the bare to the ground, easy enough. Here: http://www.ibanez.com/support/wiring/RG1570.gif

The Dimarzio pup are wired with the gr/bare -> ground, the w/bk twisted together to the switch & the red to the switch.

Now the SD wiring diagram, seen here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=HSH_1v_1t_5w

Obviously shows a different wiring than either the DMZ or the Ibanez. Just wanted to make sure that this will produce the same selection & effect as the other diagrams. Also, if it does, why does SD do it this way? Is it just that the pups are made different or that the wires are just different colors? Thanks you in advance!! As soon as I get my answer I can finish my guitar LOL

You've got several considerations here. First, yes, they all use different colors. Its too bad, but there's no standardization on pup colors. But there's also no standardization on wind-direction or mag polarity either. So, it wouldn't do any good to standardize only colors.

Next, sometimes when Ibby uses the Duncan Designeds, they flip the mag on one pup, which alters the colors again.

The best thing to do is buy an inexpensive meter and test polarity yourself. Use the technique I show here.

Re: This might be a stupid question......

Pickup manufacturers use their own respective color codes. By using the diagrams from each company you can determine which wire colors correspond to hot/ground/etc. After you have that figured out it's just a matter of connecting them correctly to your circuit. Labeling each wire for its function would make things go smoother, I think. A small piece of tape on the hots (for example) will help you keep things straight mentally when soldering it all in place.

Listen to Artie, he knows best.

Re: This might be a stupid question......

Obviously for the SD pups the black is the hot & for the DMZ pups the red is the hot. I guess my most important question is, how do I need to wire the SD pups to achive the 5-way selection as shown in the Ibanez diagram?

Artie, got another question, would the Ibby & DMZ diagrams be considered "auto-split"? If so, then what would pos 2&4 be doing in the SD wiring diagram?

Through my never say quit attitude I found this: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=color_codes

Which leads me to believe that this is the wiring diagram I will need: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=1h_1s_1h_1v_1t_5w_as

Which clears up most of my concerns, although I am still curious what pos. 2 & 4 do in this wiring config: http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=HSH_1v_1t_5w

Yup, that one auto-splits your humbuckers.

That one doesn't split. Its just a straight pup selection. So #2 and #4 would give you full-neck/middle and middle/full-bridge respectively.

Re: This might be a stupid question......

Yup, that's what I thought. I also found out that the Ibby pups come stock as regular spacing, not F-spaced as I was led to believe. As soon as I get her back together again I'll see if the strings line up any better. Thanks for all your help!
