This week's pedal build

Yeah, only one this week I know... been quite busy.

I've built around 14-15 functionning pedals at this point and I like it a lot. However, I realized that I hadn't done a "must" pedal for DIYers: a tubescreamer.

I therefore set-out to correct that "problem".

Here is my TS808 tubescreamer clone.

Acid-etched enclosure (cheap drawing by yours truly).
The switch is designed to toggle between symmetrical and asymmetrical clipping.
Home-etched PCB (tonepad layout)
Blue led...
That's basically it.

Enjoy the pics.

Re: This week's pedal build

Very cool...

The only thing (of course, it's about tastes and all...) is the color of the knobs... I did not like it at all. I think with black ones, the pedal would look even better you know...

I tried a few diffefent colors and balck was a close second. I wanted some color on there and blue was nice with the blue led.
Might make it a bit more toy-like (which i know isn't everyone's cupotea) but with my "skillful" drawing it seemed nice to me.

As you said, questikn of tastes... Thanks for your input doc!

Very nice Phil...I built an 808/TS9 pedal for our other guitarist and it just sounds better than any stock or modded TS9 or 808 I've ever played through..Maybe cause it's all handwired and with really great components? Your stuff is really nice!

Re: This week's pedal build

Thanks John, I bet your stuff sounds amazing. I use what I can source easily as far as components go. I'd buy Panasonic caps or even fancier ones but they're not available anywhere around and I haven't found a nice bulk aution of 'em either on ebay. The green film caps are quite ok so far (never had a noisy build so far, everything's been dead silent). As far as tone improvement would be I don't know but will eventually.

1% metal-film resistors is about as picky as I get.

A capacitance meter is very useful though, allows me to really select caps as close as possible to the target value.

This thing sounds really good too so I know there's something I'm not doing too badly! ;)

Wow that is wicked awesome! I might have to buy something from you. Haha! Great work man! :)

Re: This week's pedal build

I know I've missed this, but where did you learn how to do the etching from?
I've found a few tutorials on the web when I wanted to learn how to etch PCBs. The principle's the same. The drawing stuff I learned through trial and error. You can transfer toner like you'd do for a pcb layout for a pre-determined piece. What I did for this one is: do a coat of paint, wait a couple hours for it to become sticky and draw directly on it with a nail. The drawing is exposed to the acid, which etches tue design. Now if I could only draw properly...

Very nice. Love the home pcb etching - reminds me of my grad days making circuits in the lab.
