You described exactly how I thought the basswood on my ibanez sounded.

Which IMO is a good thing for playing rock.

Yeah, basswood works in some applications, I have a gut feeling it'd make for a dull Strat though. There's always ash if you want a twangy strat! Oh and poplar, but I've never played a poplar axe of any description.
