Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

So after unsuccessfully searching for a new amp locally today (I did get a great deal on a new acoustic though!) I've started thinking about pre-ordering one of these guys & I was wondering what you fellas (or ladies if applicable) thought? They are being offered in a 5W Class-A 1X8, 20W 1X10, 20W head, 50W 1X12, & a 50W head. I believe they all run on two EL34's as far as power tubes, except the 5W which only runs on one but it is nice to see lower wattage amplifiers being offered with something other than EL84's!!!!

So if I do go ahead & pull the trigger I'm likely going to take the 20W head as 50W is a bit more than I really require so I figure I might as well save the $100-$200? Plus I can't stand single 10in drivers in combination amps!!! That said, I think the 50W head or combo is switchable down to 1W just like the 20W & I think I remember hearing something about there being something kind of special about the attenuation on these that makes them feel better at lower wattage levels but I could be wrong about that???

From what I can tell it's not a high gain Marshall by any means... It's more like a JTM45 with a master Vol., switchable effects loop, & power attenuation but that's kinda what I'm looking for in a amp. I rarely use more than a mild breakup from my physical amplifier anyway, preferring my Wampler Pinnacle or Dirty Shrily O.D. instead & it looks like a good "Pedal Platform Amp" however I'm a little anxious as to the fact that they are brand new to the market. Without being out on the market currently there's not a lot in the way of honest reviews yet, just some people at NAMM giving they're initial impressions....

Basically I'm stuck between trying one of these or something a little more tried & true like a DSL40C which I know that I'll like, even though I'm specifically interested in the GREEN (clean/crunch) CH & I'll probably never use it's second RED CH....

I'll leave Marshall's description below...

I'm very interested in the 50 watt head. But I kinda want to add a 100 watt amp to the stable.

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

I’ve never seen an amp company more afraid to describe what their products sound like.

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

in video clips which we all know are perfect judges of all of an amp's sounds, origin20 seems to sound decent but on the brighter side

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

I'm interested to hear these. I'm more of a JCM800 kinda guy, but I also love the Bluesbreaker amps and Plexi models. It's great to see a lower cost version of them come out. Not everyone that wants those sounds can afford one of the hand wired premium reissue amps or a vintage original.

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

Thanks guys, after a bit of thought I think I’m going to go with the 50W head? It’s only $100 more & with the 50W/10W/1W attenuation it almost seems silly not to. The combo is temping but I’ve got a great V-30 loaded 2X12 that will probably sound better than the stock speaker in the combo anyway & space is always a issue for me when it comes to amps.....

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

Nice topic cause I can’t decide between the DSL40CR or the 50W Origin for my first Tube amp. I do like that classic rock crunch but I want a 2nd channel for a more piercing lead.

The DSL20CR has a 12” speaker in the combo. I might get the 20 watt DSL.

Wait until you play them is my advice.

If you're after a classic rock crunch sound as well as a lead you could always use the Origin with a boost pedal. I ran my Jubilee 2555 that way for years before I started using the channel switch; boost pedal on for leads, and volume rolled down for clean sounds.

I think the thing with the DSL is I can skip pedals. The Origin would require some pedals.

And/or volume knob riding and dynamic pick attack, the way the old school Marshall players did it when playing a non master volume amp, controlling the amount of dirt and gain as much as the volume. But boosting a Marshall with a well chosen pedal is an approach dating all the way back to Hendrix.

Power tube distortion is probably a crucial component of the tone recipe of the Origin as well, hence the power scaling feature bringing it down to operate at 5 watts or 1 watt if needed (keeping that master volume cranked way up). The DSL family, and the JVM, amp designs are based mainly on getting the distortion tone mostly in the preamp and only using as much master volume as needed.

Ahhh good point about the “Powerstick” attenuator. I don’t want an amp that the only time I can enjoy it is when no one is at the house!

Re: Thoughts On Marshall's New Origin Series.....

I wish they would take the power section of this and release as a stereo rack amp. 20 W with 2 x EL34 is just amazing. (I have never gotten EL84s to sound right.) Oh, a man can dream.
