Thoughts on Pedal Tuner vs Clip on?

Re: Thoughts on Pedal Tuner vs Clip on?

Well, looks like my trusty old Korg DT10 is giving out on me. I have to stomp the switch several times to get it to do anything. So now I guess my question gets really practical. Do I replace it, or use a clip-on? The group I mainly use this board with is super noisy, and the instant mute would be nice.

Thoughts?

What pedal tuners are all the cool kids using?

Used a cheap clip on at practice that came with a Mooer order from somewhere on Amazon. It was pretty ok.

The trick to tuning in a super noisy environment whether with a strobe tuner or clipon, i found was that the string that needs tuning should be the only one ringing while the rest are hard muted.

The good old boss tu3 should work, korg pitchblack are also fine. There are some problems reported by people regarding the polytune but its an option

I think clip ons are too unstable in any loud environment. Not so much between songs, but it makes it really hard to tune in the middle of a song.

Good point. Nice thing about a pedal tuner is being able to tune at any time without disrupting things, even mid-song. I really hate hearing bands with a guitarist out of tune. Chords can be really annoying.

I've even had problems tuning between songs with them. It wasn't as much of a problem with a solid body electric; but my Gretsch hollowbody and my acoustic would both go crazy if the bass or drums were doing pretty much anything.

Agreed. My clip-ons are much less stable in a noisy environment.

Guess which one works with my forty-eight-year-old classical guitar. Still, I like a pedal tuner; there's just no getting away from it for me.

You guys bend notes all the time right? That is pure "tuning on the fly".
If you can do that, you should be able to sort out a single string during a song no sweat just by using your ears. It is quicker and more accurate than any tuner.
You can wait till a break between songs if you need to use the security blanket of technology.

If I wore a tuner on my guitar at a show; someone in the first few rows would be wearing it before the second song.

Pedal is much safer.
