Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Yeah the amp definitely has enough gain so I'm sure that pickup will be good in the guitar.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Dude - this is 80's metal. Slap a JB in a plywood Kramer and rock on. Over thinking it!

All my tone comes from my Marshall, a Boss DD-3 and some Jack Daniels.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

As someone who never dug 80s metal, I like the 59/Custom Hybrid idea. It is a great pickup, but I ain't hearing 80s metal in there.

Actually, having read all the posts, I don't understand the reason why the OP started the thread, did he wanted an advice or only a confirm?

i got the impression.. sorta confirmation unless he could be convinced of another 'pup..

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Well I hear what your saying but I have heard it is rich in harmonic contect which can get me that pinch harmonics and it has good chunky strums with that hybrid

It appears confirmation, high fives, and "atta boys" were the goal because any suggestion other than the already ordered pickup has been shot down.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

IMO the 59 coil isn't going to be a big advantage for 80s metal tones. You don't need the complex midrange where the 59/C's special character lives. I think much of its mojo might be wasted when you're using classic scooped-mid distortion.

I'd consider a Custom 5. Or a regular ceramic Custom. Both offer strong output with less compression than a JB. Fairly near your 13K target for DCR, and better noise cancellation at high gain than the Hybrid's mismatched coils.

I love the Hybrid but to me it's like a PAF with a chip on its shoulder. A toned-down metal pickup, not so much. Just my opinion, of course.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

The OP mentioned the 80s metal he going for as Dokken , VH and Crue . I've had the 59/Custom hybrid and with my Friedman and Splawn amps it nailed the vibe of those bands and more

A friend of mine played Iron Maiden with a strat, I-dont-remember-what pedal and a JCM800, and he was even convincing, BUT back in the late 80s (and in the wake of 90s, before Kurt wiped out the fields), you have my age so you might remember it, almost every neon colored guitar around had a JB with basswood body, that and the actual sound of the JB we all know lead to think it could be the natural choice.
I agree that you can however nail that sound with the 59/C pickup but I think its complex harmonics, especially on the mid-high, can make it much more difficult.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

I actually tend to play more rythum than lead overall so dont forget the 59/custom has some nice bass response to it as well and would be good for chunky rythums with the amp pushing it. I play the rythums and the riffs usually not so much the leads.I usually do my own leads for things I am an Improv'er lol

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

For 80's metal my most often other used pickup has usually been a Custom, so go on ahead with the 59/Custom. It'll be fine.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Ok thank you all for your inputs though I do appreciate the responses.I will put her in and see whats up.Im sure I will be fine with this p/u.But if it doesnt have enough gas I'll just exchange it for something hotter thats all.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Aint it though? Actually, I dig 80s Maiden, and 80s Black Sabbath, but that is about where my 80s metal ends.

well.. i dig me some grim reaper, warlock, diamond head, metallica, megadeth,Black n' Blue,Dokken,Faster Pussycat, fastway, motorhead,Helloween, priest,Ozzy,DIO,Anthrax,Motley Crue,Maiden and WASP.. im sure there are others but those come to mind right off

I also LOVE maiden from the 80's.. live after death album and peace of mind are my favorite albums but wasted years and rhime of the ancient mariner have to be my favorite songs by them. On black sabbath, i only listened to the ozzy years until that thread on sabbath.. so i listened to a few DIO era songs.. I have heard the song Mob Rules from the movie HEAVY METAL though..

ok two or 3 of those might not be what i call would call metal but are more hard rock I think

My xwife used to give me much sh*t when we where together about my love of 80's metal.. well hell she liked sh*t like wham and duran duran..

80's metal is truely my favorite genre.. that and some good blues

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Everyone always screams "JB for 80's metal" but in reality, players used almost every humbucker available at the time. If you wanted lower output, you'd use a PAF or '59.... for high output, a Custom, Super Dist. or hot Gibson pickup.

The only reason the C/59 Hybrid wasn't a hugely popular pickup back then is that it hadn't been produced yet.
The Custom 5 would have been really popular too.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

No doubt a lot of Distortion, SuperD, Custom went on in that music.

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Maybe you can play metal with a chainsaw too if you put a piezo on, anyway I remember a flood of JBs in every guitar around during the 80s, so it's "philologically" correct to use it.

(just kidding)

Re: Thoughts on the 59/custom hybrid for 80's metal

Ha, I am not a big blues fan either.
But check out the 80s Sabbath...it is worth it. Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules & Born Again are wonderful.
