Thoughts on the Sentient/Pegasus combo for non-metal genres

Hello pickup gurus! So as my title states, I’m curious about anyone who may have had any experience with the Sentient & Pegasus pickups. I’m been scouring the internet looking for a used PRS Custom s2 and one of the best deals I’m seeing has had the pickups upgraded to this combo. I’ve seen lots of raving reviews on them, but they mostly talk about his great they are for metal.

Thing of it is, I’m primarily a blues & rock player. I do like to play some Metallica on occasion, but Gary Moore and Led Zeppelin and the like are my bread and butter. There won’t be any djenty prog coming out of my axe.

Would I be better off looking elsewhere or is this metal combo capable of toning it down and pumping out some blues?

The biggest difference I hear is in the bass. The Sentient/Pegasus is just tight. It isn't the least bit squishy. This can work for other styles in the neck, but the bridge pickup is where the issue might be. It is pretty loud and compressed for blues, taking away some dynamics as it makes everything more of the same volume. If GM and LZ are your benchmarks, I'd opt for something in the PAF territory.
If this is a great deal, buy the guitar and sell the pickups in it, and get a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers instead!

Totally agree with Mincer. If you have a great deal on a guitar you've been looking for don't pass on it because of the pickups. Chances are you already have yout preference tone wise and would change the stock pickups too. And as far as I can tell, the Sentient/Pegasus is quite hip with all the modern guitarists, so you won't have problems selling them.

I have my Sentient paired with a Nazgûl, so cant talk about the Pegasus. I love the thing, not very hot, but I'd say it's among the tightest of neck pickups I have played so far. Which is something that I love, but definitely not a blues sound.

Thanks for the responses! I’m seeing a couple others in the same price range with the JB/jazz combo instead. I’m thinking this might be a better choice.

Well, again, the JB is clearly a rock pickup. It is rude and loud, and has an upper mid spike you don't hear in blues. And it is also a compressed-feeling pickup. I am thinking of something between 7-9k.

I don’t have any experience with the sentient, but I do think the Pegasus is a great pickup

I personally find the Pegasus sounds better with a ceramic magnet, both for metal and less aggressive genres. It brings some balance that the A5 doesn’t have. I also tried an A6 and an A8 with it, and the ceramic sounded best to my ears. I didn’t try anything lower output because I put it on my one and only dedicated metal axe, but since I spend most of my time doing bluesy rock, I didn’t want to get pups that were overly metally either. The Pegasus really fit the bill

Holy cow. I just looked it up on the SD website and sure enough, the JB is like 16k. I didn’t realize it was THAT hot. I’ll probably just buy one with stock pickups and get new ones later. I’ve heard good things about Pearly Gates (I’m also quite the ZZ Top fan) and the Whole Lotta Humbuckers, which you had mentioned before too. Thanks for your help!

I actually just recently purchased that set..... I also returned it less than a week later. I play some metal, but mostly alternative type music, and just good ol' rock n roll. I have in my recent years developed a sincere affection for blues as well. This is no surprise, as Blues is where all the rest of it originated from. I think there is a part of just about anyone who plays guitar that can appreciate Blues. And I have realized that in learning more blues licks and just practicing from that angle, I have become better all around. It has just opened my playing up and caused me to think about things differently than I had for as long as I can remember. Anyway, what drew me to the Pegasus/Sentient set was the fact that they are Alnico V pickups, and I was looking for something different to try other than my Pearly Gates which are Alnico II magnets. I know that you can't really base what a pickup will sound like off of what type of magnets they have alone. Well, I know that now that is. Up until I tried the Pegasus/Sentient set, I had always had the idea that generally speaking, Alnico II pickups are the 50's, warmer PAF type tones, and Alnico V pickups were a bit hotter and spikier sounding, having a bit more bite and high end attack. I always liked the alnico IIs better because of their low end, among other things. The Pegasus/Sentient set though, was none of those things, especially in comparison to my Pearly Gates. PGs are Alnico II PAF type pickups that have what I consider to be "that thing" that just defines what a Les Paul sounds like to me when I think of them, only just a hair more output. Instead of 7k, they are 8k (neck) and 8.4k (bridge), and with them there seems to be a bit of extra everything, but mids is most noticeable to me. (Compared to my other favorite Alnico IIs, the Gibson 57 Classic/ 57 Classic Plus set, and others as well) The Pegasus/Sentient set just seemed to be lacking all around. The best way I could describe them is the way many folks describe EMGs, just sterile, and lifeless (which I would not at all consider EMGs). Now I'm sure there are many people out there who get them to work just beautifully, after all, the majority of it is in the hands of the player anyway, and ultimately, I think those pickups and I just didn't jive for some reason, and that is okay. That little detour is what taught me that with my Les Paul, if it aint broke, I'm never trying to fix it again. I was an idiot for wanting to take the pickups out of a guitar that I could literally use to play anything with, AND sound great no matter what it was. When I think about it now I laugh, and I appreciate the fact that rather than assuming there must be something better out there, that its also entirely possible (and more likely) that I was actually lucky for once when I picked those pickups out, and I managed to purchase the absolute most remarkable pickups for ME and a Les Paul on the first try. That guitar is my number one, and I don't ever see that changing. It is literally my favorite guitar in the whole wide world, and someone could offer me something different, and I would certainly take it, and likely even love it, but my Standard will always have that spot locked down. It's just as Les Paul as a Les Paul could possibly be in my book. I've heard people say to be patient when you shop for a Les Paul, and play the hell out of a bunch of them and eventually, you'll find the one, and when it happens, you'll just know. Well that guitar is my "The One".

You mentioned that this s2 you’re considering is a good deal. Depending on your preference and situation, you could buy this guitar in question and try out the pickups. I think they’re pretty cool. They’re probably not ultimately what your after, but you could get this guitar, then buy the pickups you do want, and make a decent amount flipping the Pegasus and sentient on reverb or eBay.

Don't be overwhelmed by the JB's high Resistance. As long as you can handle the upper mid-range Spike, it sounds wonderful parallel to self and split for a number two Strat position.

I have one set up with a JB that I regularly use for blues and blues rock. 70% of the time it is parallel to self or in the second position and you get plenty of output and a nice balanced timber.

And when I want to kick it up a notch I just go to the unmodified JB and knock walls down :-)

You can't go wrong with either of those for what you want to do.

Update in case anyone is curious.

Sure enough I ended up buying the s2 with the Sentient & Pegasus. I offered $1090 and the guy took it. It’s a 2020 and it’s Whale Blue which was the color I wanted and a custom 22, which i also wanted and are a little harder to find than the 24. And I’ve got a set of Pearly Gates on the way from SD, the cost of which will be offset when I sell the current pickups. So I’m pretty excited.

Thanks again for everyone’s help!

Now you gotta post a pic of that!

I like the Sentient in the neck a lot with the right guitar. have 2 in play both in 25 scale Carvins. One in my 93 solid Koa with a Alt 8 in the bridge and in my mahogany neck and body 06 DC 400 with a hybrid in the bridge. Have played the Pegasus a couple times in guitars and they are not bad.
Would not have gone with the PG set for the tones you are talking way to bright and crunchy i actually just pulled a set out of a guitar for a Jazz Perpetual Burn set. Could not get that singing neck woman tone for one thing and the bridge was just to harsh and bright. The good thing is if they don't work for you you have the 22 day Return from Duncan. Really like the Gates set in a dark 24.75 scale guitar like a Les Paul but find them to bright and harsh in many guitars.

I’ve heard the PG has got a lot of high end but PRS’s are usually pretty warm. I figured it would offset it a bit with the mahogany body. I had thought about the Whole Lotta Humbuckers or a Seth Lover set too. You think one of them might have been better?

Hey, thanks to everyone here for your help! I just got my guitar back from the luthier with the new Pearly Gates and holy cow, I am thrilled with em! They incredibly dynamic as opposed to the hotter but more compressed Pegasus/Sentient. I now have exactly what I was looking for; a classic rock/blues machine in a sleek modern, easy to play package. Couldn’t have done it without you guys! Here’s the finished product…

Hey everyone, Excellent info! Newbie here...different question: Has anyone tried a Sentient (neck) and PG (bridge) combo? I just picked up a used PRS SE Custom 24 (30th anniversary edition) that is in mint condition...I upgraded to Schaller locking tuners and a Rand Jackson wiring harness (with 550 pots), but the stock double-humbuckers are under-whelming, to say the least. I also have a Pegasus that I was thinking of putting in my bridge-only ESP LTD Black Metal (I cannibalized the original Black Winter pickup for another project). The PRS will be more for rock, some blues, and even the occasional clean sound out of my VOX. The ESP is definitely for those dark metal nights :) Thanks and Happy Holidays to you all!

Glad the OP found success.
I think that the Pegasus Sentient set is something that I would like. But I would put it in my 7 string Shecter with a fixed bridge. It would be perfect for prog jazz. Especially if running the Sentient in parallel.

Welcome to the forum!
If you already have a particular pickup, I say go ahead and try it. The Sentient, while decidedly more modern sounding than most PAF-types, should be fine with a PG in the bridge. Also a Pegasus should sound great in your ESP. It is a versatile pickup that sounds great at all gain levels, so I'd love to hear how it works out there.
