With so many options and pickups to choose from its really confusing on whats the best choice out there, was wondering if THE EVERYTHING AXE SET is the way to go.Im still undecided!
Supposed to be the best picked out by SD himself.
Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions/ideas out there?
Anyone out there have this set and like/dislike?
Basically to cover mostly ROCK/CLASSIC ROCK,etc,,,,,

My idea of how an everthing axe should be.

There's been a few modifications to this guitar.

The bridge is a BroBucker and it splits much better. The neck is a a4 59n, with braided wires. So I am not splitting the neck any more. I have to confess that I think a clean hb like mine gives much better approximations of a strat neck tone even in full HB mode. Split even a 8.00K PGb in the neck did not give me the result I wished for.

But consequently it doesn't have 22 positions now. I am too lazy to count how many it has right now! :D

Lol!

How many of the positions do you actually use on that guitar? Does it get confusing in a live situation?

Re: thoughts/opinions on the EVERYTHING AXE SET!

Hell yeah, it interferes with my drinking!

:smokin: :laugh2:

It actually is not that difficult. All of the minis are on/off/on. The mini close to the volume pot near the bridge pickup, controls the bridge pickup (slug coil and full HB). With the second mini close to the first controls the neck (full HB) or the screw of the bridge. The third one controls the middle only (so there is some waste afterall  ). All them pots are 500K.

No need to say that the Brobucker does full HB PAF tones perfectly. I can get not only the slug of the bridge with the middle pickup, but also the screw of the bridge with the bridge. But I have 2 vol 2 tones only for the first one, not the second one. The second one is controlled with only one volume and tone. :yell: Moreover, a position I cannot get is the screw of the bridge with the neck pickup. I can get the slug and the neck pickup (with separate vols and tones).

:eek13:

Anyways, you gotta spend some time with this guitar.

One more thing: In order to get a very clear and non-bassy neck HB, I swapped the a5 of the 59 with an a4. It worked. ;)

I think he means the JB Jnr/Duckbucker/lil '59n set. Thats what I thought anyway. I'm thinking of maybe going that way with my Legacy.

Re: thoughts/opinions on the EVERYTHING AXE SET!

I personally have been thinking about something similar:

lil 59 neck
Stack + middle
JB Jr Bridge

I currently have a 1994 WW2 strat in with a calibrated set of Stack + and just as LEW says.....95% vintage with that 5% extra something.

My only complaint with the duckbucker is when string bending....the 3/3 arrangement causes loss. Thats why I want to throw in the Stack +.

Might have to throw the blender pot in also. I want to put it into a nice tobacco burst strat.

How big a problem is the loss?

Re: thoughts/opinions on the EVERYTHING AXE SET!

Still thinking about this set but the only concern I have is the 59N pickup might be to Bassy sounding,I've had that problem in the past with the full size ones.
Anyone else have the same problem?
Any remedies?
Thanx

Well enough that I didn't like it. I had tried one in a friends. Now that said, the Vintage Rails is suppose to be the same thing, but you wont get the drop off. The are both wired in parallel if I remember correctly. But honestly, IMO go for the Stack+, based on the '62 Strat pickups, give you that vintage sound with a little extra umph.....and if you really want, you can even add a switch or something to cut the stack + (no longer noiseless) to give true vintage sounding output.

I honestly can't say enough about the Stacks+ you would be amazed at how much quack there still is in those......

I bought mine from LEW.....he is a regular here and he actually beta tested them as well for SD. He was very helpful.

The Pearly Gates do come in a single coil size, but I believe it is a Custom Shop order. Have a look under custom shop

Replacements for Strat® Guitars

Strat & Pearly Gate Sound $140

It appears to be just like a little 59 or a JB Jr in looks. Don't know anything more about it.

Sorry no audio clips.......I will see if any of my friends have gear I can record with.

What are you trying to get out of your middle pickup? What combinations are you trying to get with it as well? That might help me understand what you want out of it.

Re: thoughts/opinions on the EVERYTHING AXE SET!

I have the Everything Axe set in my old Squier. The pickups are great, and my Strat now covers every style of music you can think of. The JB Jr. is actually a super-high-output ceramic magnet based pickup, and it really makes the tubes in my amp scream. I can even play convincing palm muted rhythms without dialing in any gain. The Duckbucker is has a really low DC resistance with a ceramic magnet, so it has such a crystal-like treble response. I have heard of it being described as a '57 Strat sound without the hum, but I don't know exactly what a '57 Stratocaster sounds like. The Lil 59 in the neck position gives a surprising replication of classic Gibson/PAF tone from a ceramic-magnet-based pickup in a Strat-style guitar. The ability to mix and match these opens a huge realm of creativity. The JB Jr. sound awesome with a light overdrive, and the Duckbucker sounds like a saxaphone when played through a fuzz pedal.

Re: thoughts/opinions on the EVERYTHING AXE SET!

I'm digging this from the archives.

Anybody have any new/added thoughts on the SD Everything Axe Set with the JB Jr/Duckbucker/Lil 59 setup?

What about another versatile set in single coil package like a Hot/Cool/Vintage Rails setup? Obviously quite different, but still a huge variety.

I realize this is probably near blasphemy, but I'm not looking for an authentic era specific tone. Mostly I just want a bunch of variety.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
