Three guitar projects upcoming

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

No. It's like a typical Fender style super switch, but with only three positions.

I haven't ever tried the Freeway, because everyone says it's garbage, and I can't imagine it working very well either.

I hadn't heard about the negative feedback about the
current Freeway design (did read issues about their 1st iteration). What is the make /model on the switch you will be using?

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

Looking forward to seeing these progress!

I would have started grain filling the other day, but I didn't have any naphtha to wash the bodies with first. They have a bunch of newsprint stains from the packing material they were shipped in (shredded newspaper).

I should have some time next week to at least slap a single coat of filler on the ash bodies.

I don't think I'll be filling the alder one. I'm going for a somewhat home-made look on the body. I'll be using Krylon Industrial Acrylic-Quick lacquer in Hunter Green. A bunch of that, with perhaps some primer below, should be fine. I don't mind if a little sunken alder grain is present in the end.

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

Can’t say I have ever grain filled Alder. Usually, the sanding sealer is enough.

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

Technically, it should be done, but if a sanding sealer is used, it's not really necessary, especially if a primer follows the sealer.

Fender took care of filling and sealing in one step once the started using Fullerplast circa 1963. Most '60's Fender finishes are actually pretty thick compared to their '50's and early '60's finishes.

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

Tonight I greatly "improved" (subjective, of course) the contours on the Strat. I still have a healthy amount of rounding and blending to do, but I think the major re-shaping is done. This is closer to the stereotypical '50's Strat contours (though they varied quite a lot all the up till CNC started being used).

I also wiped down the other two with Ronsonol, and inspected them more closely. The alder Tele will indeed need to be filled, at least on the end grains. There are a few minor router tearouts on the butt end of the guitar and in the neck pocket, and a little ding on one of the roundovers.

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

Well, I said I was done carving...but I lied. I cut into the belly cut today, and a little more on the forearm contour as well, especially along the butt end of the guitar. I blended and rounded almost good enough to call it done. There's a little more fine tuning I have to do with hand sanding, but it's basically how it's gonna be shaped in the end.

The '84 AVRI with a real 9-hole nitrate guard, which I told Silence Kid about earlier. Not quite as contoured as I remember it. May be, or may not be, a real 1959 body.

I have to look it up again. It's some German make.

If that doesn't work out, I might just go with a five-way super switch, which I would try to wire to give me:

1: bridge humbucker
2. bridge humbucker in series with screw coil from neck
3: stud coil from neck + screw coil from bridge in series, humbucking
4" neck humbucker in series with screw coil from bridge
5: neck

I do have an oddball military 3-way toggle that would give me 1, 3, and 5 as well, without needing the special German 3-way super switch. But I only have one, and I kid of wanted to use it in the Les Paul Special project I have in mind.

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

I received a bunch of small parts for these projects today, and ordered the Montreux '55 Strat plastics.

Strap buttons, ferrules, string trees, knobs, hardtail bridge plate, pat. pend. Strat saddles, Strat guard, pickguard screws, grounding plate.

The Pickguardian sent me something for the Tele:

...and Gordon Miller a little something for the Strat (Montreux '55-correct polystyrene plastics):

As far as I have been able to determine, these are the only Strat plastics manufactured in this late '54–'57 style and material...and Gord Miller is the only United States distributor for them…and it was his last set…and the CEO of Montreux just died unexpectedly. I may have been very lucky to inquire about these when I did. Who knows what is going to happen with the company now!

Re: Three guitar projects upcoming

First, contrats for that three wonderfull bodies !
This is beautiful ash.

See, I was never a big headstock fan. I liked the smaller ones...and, better balance.

It is true for Teles : on the seventies Deluxe Telecaster the big headstock gives a bad balance : it is too heavy for the tele body (and that one has belly contour).
The neck keeps going down when you gig with it.

That said the big headstock is nice.
