Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

IF im playing powerchords with the root on the A string, my thumb automatically moves over to rest on Low E to mute it, i don't use it for anything other than that though.

Ah, the ever elusive "thumb over the low E" technique which I'm still trying to master. That's all I can do though, thumb over the low E, badly and with a lot of fret buzz.

+1

I only use it for muting.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

Instead of playing "E" based barre chords, I thumb the E string and it frees up my pinky to play a 6 chord, a sus 4 or an add 9. It also sounds more like an open chord when you mute the A string along with thumbing the E.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

There had better be a really good reason for my thumb to creep up that way... say to fret a root note of a chord that wouldn't be possible with four fingers. I don't use mine to cover up sloppy picking and keep the E from making noise.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

I have a Schecter Blackjack, long-scale 7 string, and I find myself wrapping around it to get to the B and E strings. It's a real pain, but I wrap around on a 6 string so it's easier just to stretch it out than to switch techniques. Although I have started playing D/F# with my fingers, as a D2/F# because on the 7 string, I play it like that AND thumb the low D. So it's not really an F# in the bass. It kind of takes the shape of a regular G chord. The real pain is playing a regular C chord and thumbing the low C.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

hmmm. I've found that i use thumb over top to Low E when i'm playing standing. Sliding up and down using E shape barres. I find "thumb-in-the-back" barring soon fatigues my hand/wrist. Using a few "lazy" thumb-overs, is soo different it rests the tired bits. Also it's not the thumb-proper (where the print is) but rather the bony-joint's side. Jimi made it look easy. I get some buzz sometimes

thanks for those who shed their thoughts...

PS: what the heck is a Hi-Z input?

If it works, use it.. it's rock and roll.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

Check out Vai's technique, he has the thumb either on top or hanging over the top for everything. Check out his dual with the karate kid in the movie crossroads.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

I usually only mute low E with my thumb, it doesn't really go much farther without feeling really awkward. I don't really even use it uless I have to mute low E and A. I'll mute low E with my thumb and A with my pointer finger.

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

The only song I play that uses the thumb to actually play notes on the low "E" is "Red Barchetta" by Rush. Other than that, I never use it.

I use my thumb a lot on the low E. It's a must for playing poly chords such as D/F# and also a lot of Hendrix stuff such as Little Wing, Wind Cries Mary etc.:)

Re: Thumb over the top - Just for Low E???

Yeah, once in a while I'll flip the thumb over the top and fret the E. Comes in handy.
