Tilting pickups on semi hollow electric guitar.

Is it normal for pickups on semi hollow electric guitars to easily move? They don’t feel loose but you can easily tilt them. Is that normal?

Re: Tilting pickups on semi hollow electric guitar.

It's just as normal or abnormal as any other humbucker guitar. The way they mount in the rings is no different.

This is one of the things that annoy me about the way most humbuckers are mounted. It’s a stupid design from 50 years ago.

Some humbuckers have three high adjustment screws. That allows you to angle the pickup to match the strings, and stops it from wobbling.

When you buy new Duncan pickups the jewel case is packed with gray foam.

I cut two humbucker sized pieces out of that foam and put it in the bottom of each pickup cavity.

Helps keep the pickups from tilting.

I use pickup foam, too, but in some semi hollows, and true hollowbodies...well, you'd need a lot of foam. Many companies (Fender, Kiesel) use the 3 point mounting system which is better, but never took off. Tradition is a hard drug to kick!
