Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

Re: Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

Aight well it's pretty much impossible to find the Randall around here. The one dealer which has historically carried a bunch of Randall gear now no longer carries them. Called another dealer and they only have some older models, and none of the new Mike Fortin-designed stuff.

LAAAAAAAAME

But I'm gonna go check out the Engl Gigmaster tomorrow morning.

Glad you dug the Tubemeister. I had a feeling you would but, with our styles being so different, I couldn't be certain. Your opinions of it agree strongly with my own.

I can't wait to hear what you think of the Engl. I'm super curious about that amp and I'm seriously considering picking one up when I have a bit more money behind me.

Re: Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

yeah, I'm leaning heavily towards the H&K now, because the price to punch ratio is off the charts. The Engl is pricier obviously...but I'll have to see if it's as good or waaaaaaaay better. if it's just as good, then screw it, I'm gonna get the H&K and save some money.

Re: Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

How mich pricier is the Engl over here? When I was looking at it a couple of monthes ago, it was about £100 cheaper than the H&K. It's weird that the prices would change so much in another country, being that they're both Asian imports from German companies.

Re: Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

The Gigmaster 15 is $749 here apparently.
Tubemeister is $575.

Very weird about the pricing where you are.

In the US, the H&K is $599. Normally everything is more expensive here, so I'm not too sure why it's priced at $575 here, but there ya go.

Re: Time to get rid of the 100W head and move on to smaller pastures...

Ok, I got to play the Gigmaster and at loud ass volumes too.

verdict:

Clean channel - Decent but nothing special imo. It kinda barks a bit, not in a good way. Having play a couple of other Engl amps, I was always pretty impressed with the clean and crunch channels with how spanky and musical they are. The Gigmaster doesn't have that.
Lead channel - Feels way too stiff and constrained until the gain is turned all the way up. Then you get a satisfying crunchy distortion with the trademark Engl attack and note definition, but it isn't really capable of uber high gain like I want.
other crap - the mid boost feature is useless. Instead of punching up the mids, it brings back that kinda obnoxious barking sound that I heard in the clean channel, but by the truckload this time. It sounds absolutely horrible and I'd never use it. I even tried dialing a base mid-scooped tone to see how the mid boost would sound like over top of that, but it still sounded like ass.

I'm kinda disappointed TBH. I was expecting it to be better than the Tubemeister, but I don't think it is.

I have one last Randall dealer to get in touch with, but if they don't have the RD20H, I'm just gonna get the Tubemeister 18.

I tracked down a Tubemeister 18 with the carry bag AND footswitch (which is normally extra), used, at a Long & Mcquade about an hour away, for $100 less than the regular price.

No repairs or refurbishments or anything like that. Kickass.

After tax, I'll end up paying almost $160 less than I would if I were to buy a new one with the footswitch.

I win!
