Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

15-20w Tube lunchbox and an empty 1x12 from.avatar for your cl80, or an evh 1x12.

Peavey micro heads

Fender superchampx2
Bugera

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

I use a Flyrig5 or a Fractal AX8 now. No more amp carrying for me. My sound is more consistent now, too. It isn't worth playing in pain anymore.

I've scoped out a few of those. Add the EVH 5150 III and Jet City 22H to that list.

I hear ya. I used to have a Digitech RP500 that I used at practice and gigged with it a couple times on small/tight stages. Worked good but I ended up selling it. I do like the RK FlyRig5 better than the gray FlyRig. Might go that route. For what my band does, I need something like that.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

I'm 65, and I do struggle with the weight of the amps. The Mark IV with the EVM is around 80 lbs., and it seems to gain about 25 lbs. right before load-out! In addition, I carry far too much weight around my middle.

I have the small Rock 'n Roller cart, but that doesn't lift the gear into the van, so....

I've made the commitment to lose weight and to strengthen my legs and back. I still have a LONG way to go and I will never be able to wear Spandex or have Jagger's stamina, but it has definitely made things easier, more enjoyable and less painful. And I'm better about taking care of myself, stretching to help recovery and using ice or Ben-Gay to manage pain. (Learned a long time ago to not use ETOH to deal with pain.)

So yes you can use a lighter amp. But my heartfelt advice is to take better care of your body. Diet and exercise, simple as that.

Best wishes.

Bill

I've lost ~70lbs since Aug '15 and started lifting in Jan '16 ... I can d/l and squat 225+ lbs, and bent row 135+ lbs ... makes all the difference ... not lugging 4x12 w/EVM-12Ls, but feeling much better moving what I need to

Learn to lift properly and wear a lifting belt

Oh yeah, an ethos pedal amp into a neo 1x12 or 2x12
Or an amplifier into a frfr powered cab
Good luck

Ehx 44 mag or some other lightweight power amp

Plus this badass...wish I never had sold it.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Those new 100 watt Yamaha heads & the Quilter stuff sound great... & I'd take a look at one of these too.

1.5kg/3lbs with a 100 watt output :bigthumb:

Have'nt had any real problems with amp/cab carrying weight-related pain etc yet (though at my age I expect that's around the corner haha..) but I think it just sounds great and is super convenient.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Victory V30 Countess head and a 1x12 or 2x12 cab. It's the size of other lunchbox heads but not neutered with EL84s or some BS like that. It comes with 6L6s or EL34s and is 42w that power scales down to 2w. No need to even lug your Marshall to bigger gigs, just bring a bigger cab and crank it up.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Thanks for the other suggestions. A lot more options than I was aware of.

I had thought about the EHX 44 Magnum before but just about every serious review has said there's not enough clean headroom.

The Victory amp is cool. I dig that. Higher on the price scale. May as well go after a 5150 III at that point. ;)

Never heard of the Ethos stuff. May have to look more in to them. Only 30 watts RMS from the amp though.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Forgot to mention, my tech21 works fine into the front end of a Fender Blues Jr though you might seriously consider one of the Tech21 powered speaker solutions. Also works well direct to P.A. mixer + whatever pa rig you use.

I bought a FlyRig5 when they first came out and one had to wait for availability. I thought the idea was one of the best I'd heard in a long time and I wanted so much for it to work for me.......it didn't. Tried it through the front of several clean amps, in-the-loop (which I didn't think would work well), and through a PA system. It was quite noisy (hissy) in every trial, and the tones I found to be very mediocre and uninspiring. I immediately returned it. And I might add, it's the first purchase I ever returned. YMMV

Age and the accompanying aches and pains have crept up one me as well. I mainly use relatively small tube amp heads and a 2X12 horizontal cabinet (with a handle on each side) + a small (3 or 4) pedal board. You can always get your bandmate to help w/ the cab since it has a handle on each side. It's much easier to load/unload and carry than a combo of similar weight.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

It has to come to this. After this past weekend's gig, I pulled my back a little again on loadout. Granted, I use a wheel truck to move my amp back and forth but the lifting and adjusting and all that did it. Before I really mess things up, I've got to get a lighter amp setup. Been using my Vox Valvetronix AD50VT 1x12 combo for nearly 10 years now. Crazy enough, it's easier to move my Avatar 2x12 cabinet around than that amp. So, I'm eyeing the Quilter Labs ToneBlock 200 and Tech21 FlyRig RK5. A lot of positive reviews out there on both from pros and amateurs. My current pedalboard can still be utilized for the modulation effects.

Anyone else here in this boat? What do you use for a lightweight rig?

I had the same problem and put together my own rig. I built a 1X12 cabinet with a Celestion Vintage 12. I built a 40W solid state amp based on a Fender Mustang II scematic just using the amp circuit. Then I built a 5F1 tube amp. Put all this together with an A/B switch for the amps and have a nice little rig that serves me well.

5153 15 watt has no clean channel though, especially at gig level

I wouldn't be going after that one. It would be the 50 watt mini head.

Right now I am leaning heavily towards the Quilter Pro Block. It has a DI, reverb (which I like to have). I'm the only one in the band that mic's up right now. Everyone else goes DI. I may as well look at going DI as well and make our sound chick's job easier (who happens to be my wife).

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

Don't get an EVH combo.. Mine is like dragging around a dead body, that sucker is heavy!

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

It takes a little while to get used to playing DI, but I think the mix ends up better out front.

I know how heavy those are. The combo isn't even an option.

Yeah it does. I used to do it some years back. One piece of gear I forgot I had is the Behringer Ultra-G DI box. It has a 4x12 cab sim on it, level pad buttons and can be powered with phantom power from the board. I could use that with the 101 mini head between it and the cabinet (it has a thru-put speaker jack) and then DI to the board. Put my delay in the FX loop and done. Less money to spend and reaching the same end point.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

So I swung in to a local shop, Tone Shop Guitars, and they all three if the Quilter mini heads. Out of them all, I like the 101 the best. I can't justify the power and DI difference between it and the 201 for the price. The Pro Block is nice but I like the Voice options on the 101 that the Pro does not have. They all sound good though. Mighty impressed at the tones I was able to dial in. The 101 is plenty loud for what I need. I use a 50 watt amp now and barely get it to half way. And the weight? Fuh get about it. It's rediculously light at 2lbs. A Crybaby weighs more. But don't let it fool you, it is sturdy with a full metal exterior.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

You could have someone build you a head box for your amp, and continue using the combo (or any other cab) as your speaker cabinet. That way you keep the amp you love, but split its weight between two objects.

Also, try to bring a friend/roadie with you to every gig, or have a bandmate help out. Something doesn't necessarily need to be heavy to tweak your back, especially if you have pre-existing issues with it.

Re: Time to look for the lighter amp setup

I've thought about rehousing the chassis to a head shell. Even took the measurements. If I have to do that as a last resort, I will. The idea of a new amp sure is appealing though. :) It's been a long time since I got a new amp for gigging.
