Time to try something new....

I have been using DD's now for around six months now, and I just think I just got bored of the sound. I thought that I was a ceramic guy but after all the ceramic pickups I tried (X2N,DA,DD,Emg81) I just started to hate the "ceramic" sound.

I've been listening to a few clips lately and I've found one clip in particular that has blown me away! It was a clip of the custom 8 through a Marshall DSL 100. It is exactly what I'm looking for! I just love the smooth mids/highs, the warmth, and the clarity of that pickup. I recently just changed music styles from "Extreme" metal to more atmospheric/ambient metal stuff, so clarity on the chords is a must.

I was also thinking of trying the alternative-8 since I'm afraid of mag-swapping.... does anyone have experience with the alt-8? please tell me everything about the pickup!

Here is the clip of the custom 8:

C8's one of the most popular PU's here, for good reason. It takes no skill or experience to swap a magnet. Have you looked at the video on Project Guitar.com?

Yeah, I constantly realm between loving ceramics and hating them. Actives too. EMG's I have definitely grown to hate after I installed blackouts, I now find EMG's horribly noisy and lacking mids.
A8's have been a great solution to me, in JB's, Custums, even Skatterbranes. Trust me switching a mag is a piece of cake, it's just 4 stupid screws man. If you got it upside down you will hear the outta phase kinda thing.....just flip it.
Check out how I switched mags on Dirty Fingers, this was harder than on a normal humbuckers beacause they use three mags which repulse each other so they easily jump outta yer hand https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=237716

I just finished reading the whole article on how to swap mags and DAMN! it looks complicated lol.

I'll attempt mag swapping on my crappy yamaha, since I literally never use it, so if anything goes wrong I won't be losing much.

I first need to get all the tools, then I'll study the article really carefully before I attempt it. And if all goes wrong, I'll just pay the guy at the shop to do it for me.

Anyways.....Has anyone ever compared the alt 8 to the custom 8? I could just buy the alt 8 since it comes stock with the mag.

. . . atmospheric/ambient metal . . .

I'm intrigued by this description. Could you give me a couple of group names that I could look up on YouTube to hear what this sounds like?

I can relate to the part about starting to hate the "ceramic" sound dude, I was in that place for a while.

Just put whatever is after the v= in the URL inside a YOUTUBE tag. You can just click the quote button to see how I did it if that doesn't make sense.

Oh, and magnet swapping is way easier than you think. You pull the pickup out, loosen the baseplate, push the magnet out, then reverse that. It's cake, dude. Don't be scared.

If we can swap mags, so can you. No geniuses here. Try it first on a cheap Asian PU if you're hesitant. After that, you'll be a pro.

as for the mag swapping, I really don't know how to solder or wax the pickups...that is the only hard part. Also, I have never wired pickups before.
