Tinting a finished maple neck..possible?

Re: Tinting a finished maple neck..possible?

LOL! You sure know a lot about space-age polymers and ions for a music major!!! :laugh2:

*shrug* I took senior level chemistry, biology, and physics courses in highschool. And I watch the discovery channel. It's probably more to do with watching the discovery channel.

Re: Tinting a finished maple neck..possible?

As Skarey and others have attested to, those MIM finishes will yellow over time. I have a '95 Strat that was whiter than the board of a Fortune 500 company when it was new. It is now a mild blonde (except where I sanded down the back to smooth it out for better playability).

It's not as yellow as a vintage tint Fender neck, but it is noticeable. I looked at an old photo of it recently and the difference is definitely apparent.

Remove the tuning machines and lightly san the head stock and the back of the neck, fret board if you can; don't remove the finish just dull it. Use a high grit sand paper, 800-1200 grit.

Then get some dark color stain, and with a clean cloth rub it in, the longer you leave the stain in the darker the color, usually about 5-10min is fine. Wipe away the excess, repeat if needed, let it dry for about 8 hrs, then sand again with a high grit 1200-1500 to remove and stickyness (if thats a word), add a sealer to keep the color from fading away, let dry and sand for smoothness.

And there you go, a nice tinted neck!

Re: Tinting a finished maple neck..possible?

How does the polish make the neck feel after its dried? Does the neck still retain that original silky smooth satin feel?

It doesn't change the nature of the finish. It feels like it would after you polish it.

Re: Tinting a finished maple neck..possible?

Thanks for all the additional suggestions.

And I thought that this thread was dead....only to be hanging on by a mere polymer.

I have to think about which method to consider trying. Too many choices. The KIWI shoe polish method appeals as it is easy and I am naturally lazy. However, a Japanese website about relic(ing) had an MSDS sheet warning against absorbing toxins (including carcinogens) from Kiwi shoe polish through the skin. Not an inviting contemplation. However, in reality, my wife's cooking is probably more hazardous in the long run. The longevity of the KIWI method was also debated/argued (as previously mentioned in this thread)

Thanks again.

don't use the reranch neck amber like I suggested earlier...it just occured to me that this would opaque the headstock logo (duh)...unless you're willing to sand off the existing logo and put on a new one.
