Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

Forgot about that. That's what I get for just shooting from the hip, rather than thinking about what I was posting.

lol... no worries. I thought you might have been joking, but I could just see someone coming along and trying that.

I would suggest to the OP to do some digging around over on the Les Paul forums and see what those guys are doing (if anything).

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

coffee/tea can work great on plastics such as knobs and pickguards but really isn't going to do anything to a modern clearcoat finish

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

LOL

...and when you're thru it will look like someone died in that bathtub.

Well of course. The owner drowned himself after finding out he ruined his guitar.

I actually thought of that episode of South Park where people poop after they die, hence the brown bathtub...but that was one of them intrusive thoughts lol

Do you know the name of that South Park episode? I'd like to check that out...

thx

This is why you should never, ever, ever listen to people on message boards.

Are you a virgin? My suggestion would be to go to a whorehouse. I mean, that's one job you want done professionally, right?

Thinking about getting a pet for your kids? I'd go with an Anaconda. Unlike dogs, your kids won't be allergic to them, and smaller snakes are too wimpy.

Getting ready for a big date? I'd suggest wearing a bright red shirt, a big cowboy hat, and tight jeans. Throw on some "Brute" cologne. Hey, it worked for Burt Reynolds!

Is the oil Light coming on in your car? If it only just came on, and you're busy, then keep driving, and check the oil later at a more convenient time. After all, those oil companies will do ANYTHING to get you to buy more oil.

;)

EDIT: now I'm thirsty for tea. Real tea, like the kind they make in the south.

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

Isn't that the episode where Chef dies? I seem to remember after he dies, he poops.

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

The South Park episode where everybody poops when they die is called "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes."

The gag comes back in "The Return of Chef", as an inside gag to fans like me who have seen every episode 3 dozen times.

Oh man, Empty Pockets sigged me. I'll never live this down. It's going to be like that joke "see that Fence over there, I built that fence with me own hands. Took me days, but do they call me 'Shamus the fence builder'? Nnooo."

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

J-J, it was an excellent post. A strong post. A post with only the best intentions in mind.

Glad you're bein such a trooper about it :D

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

This thread got derailed but its so funny...sorry OP and good luck yellowing that sweet gat!

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

by all means please keep it going!

cheers for the opinions anyway guys, i don't want to do a full relic job, i just dig the aged look and wondered if theres some way to accelerate the natural process. it's definately a player guitar and i dont really want to take it apart for any extended period of time just for extra finish coolth.
now let the zaniness resume....

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

well back on topic Id say leave it out of its case...youre going for that creamy Rhoads look, right? Thatll help I think. The expensive way would be to refin but I dont really see the point to that...

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

Do like Jerry Cantrell: take your lighter too it and give the leopard finish!

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

Pretty sure Cantrell's 'leopard' job was from extinguishing every cigarette he smoked during the recording of 'Degredation Trip.'

and yeah man, leaving the Paul on a stand where it gets lots of direct sunlight throughout the day should yellow it up nicely. That and sweating on it and smoking near it.

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

I've messed around with the idea before, finding a mixture of coffee and curry powder to be about right. But don't blame me if you make a bunch of yellow patches all over your white guitar! LOL

I've done it with pickguards.....NEVER use hot water, only cold. With a guitar, I'd try brown shoe polish with curry powder sprinkled on it, but try it in an inconspicuous place first. And don't worry about going overboard. At that point, you can take the guitar and put it in direct sunlight, and whatever dying you did will fade into the natural hue you're looking for.
Mostly concern yourself with NOT going too yellow or brown, but a nice cross between them.

I've played around with this stuff before, and it can be done, but you've got to understand that there's a risk in messing up an expensive guitar. It's a learning process, and that's why professional 'relicers' get paid a lot to make a new piece look old. They figured it out with trial and error.

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

hrm i think i'll go with the sunlight and sweat idea.....if only i could score some outdoor gigs to play with it!

Re: Tips for aging the finish on a White Les Paul

To my knowledge, Gibson uses UV inhibitors in the clear so that yellowing no longer happens.

I hope you're right. That yellowing is the reason I never even considered a white Custom. Maybe I can get one now.

The same thing with sky blue Strats -- my favorite look is sky blue with a dark rosewood board, but the blue always turns this sea-sick yellowish blue-green.
