tips on setting up for home recording

regardless of equipment ( recorders ) how about some tips on signal chain, playing technique, eq settings, mic placement, direct input, (to amp or not to amp) using effects, etc.

Anything that can work for getting a good quality demo or simply a recording for your personal keepsake.

There is simply too much to cover in a post. There are some good books out on home recording I think you should pick one up and dive in.
