Tips on Switching to Fingerstyle

Re: Tips on Switching to Fingerstyle

I had a woman ask me the other night..
"what's wrong with your thumbs?"

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Playing bass seems to "grind" the skin away very evenly, so like after playing for a long time they might feel a little tender all around. Guitar definitely cuts and digs into the fingers more.

Fretting hand maybe. I play guitar mostly with a pick . . . jumping into an hour of fingerstyle bass after a couple months off gives me big blisters on the index and middle fingertips. It seems that easing into it 20 minutes one day, 30 the next, 40, 50, 60, etc. works well to re-develop the callouses without getting blisters.
