tips/tricks for low noise recordings?

I don't have alot of trouble with noise in my recording, but im wondering if there is any tricks/tips for recording a low noise guitar track? When i crank up any type of gain, i get some low to moderate hum/buzz that translates to my recorded track. I know this is part of the game when using single coils and gain, but any tips on solving any of it?

also, really any tips for getting the most quiet/low noise recordings would be cool. I do almost everything through mic'ing, just fyi.

noiseless pick ups, shielding your guitar, power conditioner (furman).
I once comboed my signal through a DI and a Mic. i put them both in different channels and then matched the volume/ eq till it sounded really nice and clean as well as full. oh it was a modeling DI by the way not the standard tone sucking POS's

aside from what was already said you could do a couple of more things. chances are the noise isn't going to be an issue while the guitar and other instruments are going on. given that you could:

- use a physical noise supression pedal (hush or boss's version)
- use a VST noise gate (like Ggate: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php?c=483&mode=results&st=d)
- use a hi or low pass filter, depending on if the noise is low or high pitch (same link as above to the filters)
- manually edit out the non-playing parts to zero db, or automate the faders down as needed
- with headphones and the recorder armed, move around a bit and see where it's most quiet - record there.

Usually you get this from low quality mics or pres, or just having too quite a source.

With things like guitar amps it's not a real issue... but with acoustics, I edit out the silence.

With vocals, instead of editing out around every word, I slap a noisegate on the vocal chain.

I notice I pickup noise when I am next to a tv or a computer monitor. To combat this I will set the amp next to the tv and unplug it as I have limited space and usually need the computer monitor when I am recording.

To clarify, you only get this kind of noise next to CRT monitors/TVs.
