Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

I've been a fan of Floydupgrades.com's Brass Big Blocks for OFRs for over a year now, and I finally decided to give the Titanium ones a shot. I dropped for one last week that arrived yesterday. I removed the Brass one from my 1-piece Koa-bodied Warmoth Strat and replaced it with the Titanium model. After re-assembling the bridge and then re-setting up the guitar, one thing became instantly apparent:

It's amazing! Titanium is a completely different animal, to say the least. As drastic an improvement as the Brass Big Block is over the standard production Floyd block (and it is), this is over the Brass. Unbelievable note clarity and definition - notes seem to have a 'presence' for lack of a better word that was not there before. The low-end corpulence was increased noticeably, giving palm-mutes an increased urgency (this even in a guitar with a Duncan Custom Custom pickup in the bridge slot, widely rumored here to be notoriously 'soft' on the low-end. Not so in this application). Overall notes seem to 'explode' off the pick, as if your pick-attack is translated more quickly and efficiently. Not to mention one need only strike the string with your left hand on the fretboard to get the note to sound, making legato and hammer-on runs even more liquid and aggressive sounding. Harmonics seem to literally jump from the fretboard. The effect is similar to that of a sonic maximizer, if you can imagine it. Suddenly my guitar has a new level of expressiveness I'm only beginning to appreciate. Uh, yeah...I like it, a lot!! As Fat Bastard would say, "It's dead sexy!" :naughty:

And the sustain... Again, at the risk of sounding like Nigel Tufnel, it is endless. Effortless. Open chords ring forever, and single notes sing vocally, infinitely, almost majestically. Now I completely understand what Adam at Floydupgrades meant when he said "Welcome to your new crack habit." I think I'm in love with the things.

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

That sounds SCARY good! Thank you!

:thanks: I know I'm going to need at least two more of these now...:banghead: they're that good!

:joke: about the :banghead: part...will gladly fork over for them, as dramatically as they improve my guitars' tone. Again, as the old adage goes, you get excited about how you sound, so you play better! :bling:

this post is one of the reasons I belong to this forum-great info-thnx for the update. I will go pick one up for mine. How much was it by the way?

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

I got a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime (I'm sure) Ebay deal, but...:naughty:

They're on sale for $249-269 depending on the size you need for your OFR @ http://www.floydupgrades.com

Here's the page with the Titanium and Brass offerings...

BOTH the Titanium and Brass Big Blocks are dramatic improvements over the production blocks, but the Titanium ones are just sick...:D

Not cheap, but SO worth it.

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

wow, thank you for this post. I definitely want one of these now. I've already installed GraphTech saddles on my OFR, and I'm waiting for the release of Earvana's compensating locking nut. with the titanium block, the unholy trinity will be complete :headbang:

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

I believe it's good - but I don't see how anyone can tell anything from that clip.

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

I'll put up a longer one later; that was just a quickie, and not by any means was it meant to be the be-all-end-all indicator...

...it bears mentioning that sound does not have a TON of gain on it, and previously a legato run like that would have required a lot more work on my part to sound that fluid. Just sayin' I like them. :D

I have another Floyd going on a parts-build that I've already tricked out with GraphTech saddles and Stainless Steel hardware...it needs one of these..lol

Last time I spoke to Earvana, they weren't going to do a compensated R5 nut, bummer as that's all I use...:(

Yeah, who COULD know?

Yeah, who COULD know?

Unfortunately without a brass or stock block clip for comparison it doesn´t really do much good... ;)

Yeah, didn't think to do a "before" clip, sorry. Wasn't even getting too clinical in that respect because I hadn't even planned on posting this originally, I was just that jazzed and wanted to share...

And I don't even have a Floyd-equipped guitar with a standard block installed anymore to do a proper 3-way shootout scenario (even if I had something better than my crappy cellphone cam...lol), they sounded so terrible to me after trying the Brass ones that I switched all mine out to Brass almost immediately...going to of course have to be a bit more... judicious about the Titanium swap-outs...:eyecrazy:

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

Thanks for turning me on to that Floydupgrades site. That's a Godsend to a FR newbie like me.

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

my kramers with the OFR sustain pretty well. Ive put off getting a big block cuz I wondered if it was more hype than proven.. But Ive never heard a negative report.. If they sustain like they do stock, this should put it into LP territory... I still dont think I can justify the cost of the titanium.

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

Thanks a lot man...
And when I JUST got a big block for my Swing.
In fact she's still at the tech (the block screws were SOO freekin' stuck that I ended up completely stripping them without even getting them to budge, plus, she needed a setup).
Now I won't be able to be as exited knowing that there can be even better...

OTOH, my guitar has a Gotoh Floyd and it took me a long time to actually get a big block for her, I guess it'll be a while before I get to even be able to order a titanium one :scratchch

No, you just think they do, until you actually hear the difference - especially in your own guitar. Trust me. ;)

Think of it as learning to walk before you start running... :1: (At least that's how I'm justifying all the Brass ones I bought... )

Yeah, since he just started making the Brass Gotoh ones, imagine it will be a while before their Titanium counterpart debuts...

Took me a second to link the pic...

Took me a second to link the pic...

Whats the size of an OFR block that comes stock with it?

Don't have the dimensional specs, but here's a visual comparison of the standard production block and a Brass Big Block. :scratchch

Wimpy, meet Hefty. Now imagine that size a slab of Titanium!

Re: Titanium Floyd Rose Big-Blocks are the shiznit.

Not trying to be a wiseguy, honest questions..What is the real advantage of using Ti?? I mean, the whole benefit is adding heft/weight.. So.. as in your picture, brass block is bigger and heavier than the stocker. So, since Ti is light, you have to have twice as much right? How is that better than brass if you are going for the same weight?? AND... if you stick such a huge block in there, does it hinder the range of dive??

Do you have to modify your routing to get a block like that in I guess is what I'm asking?
