To all my Bros!

First off, let me say thank you to all of you that finally "got" it and backed off from some of the more child-like behavior. It makes all of our lives much easier if we don't have to dig through the "stuff" to get to the heart of a conversation.

I ran a contest receintly and put myself out there for all of you. I am not required to do such a thing but in all honesty you guys are worth it. Believe me when I tell you that the minor considerations that the SD company bestows on me in no way covers my time or expense, I do what I do because I believe in the people that run the SD company as well as their products. Evan decided that I had a good idea and he covered me on the pickup and for that I am grateful but I would have done it either way. It's the people involved that make this site great and not anyone or anything else. You guys simply rock, no two ways about it.

Evan thought that it might be a good idea to run a contest once or twice a year and I think that such a thing would be very cool but I think we can do more. This is what I want you all to do...........

Tell me what you think this site should be about. We can all rant and rave about God and government but that doesn't change anything, it only frustrates those that don't agree with the view of the day. Instead lets think about how we can make our little corner of the world a better place. Tell me what you want your world to be about.

More SD UGF CD compilations might be a start and I can play a roll in that. More contests, that can be done as well. I am sure that there are many members with some little thing they might like to give away and I am sure that such a gesture would not be ignored by myself or the folks at SD. A better Tips and Clips section, better tutorials? I can't make promises but I do know that no good deed goes unpunished!

This is your space as much as it belongs to Seymour. If you treat it as your own I am sure that it can be as cool as you want it to be. Lets hear how you want to make it better and I will do everything in my power to pull it off. Remember we aren't here for a long time, just a good time.

Just thinking about how we all want to live.

Re: To all my Bros!

Tips and Clips has improved a lot recently, and I think that's fantastic.

We need more of a focus on music! Gear talk is helpful, and will always be a big part of this site. The OT room is fun and a good way to get to know people on a more personal level. The one thing we all have in common, though, is a passion (or at the very least an interest) in music!

I think it would be cool to have a room where we can post reviews of songs or albums we've listened to, and have comments and discussion about them. Live show reviews would be cool too. If you want to pimp your own band in there, go right ahead. How does that sound?

Re: To all my Bros!

I like tips and clips, however, I've sometimes wondered if there could be some sort of tip of the day. Most of the stuff you see in that room are along the lines of someone posts a song or idea and wants feedback. What if there were just tips or little techniques to help or teach, like here's a little way to do a simple blues solo, or something along those lines?

That would be rewarding because most of us have guitars and could mess around with it. Plus, I'm not that great :smack:

Re: To all my Bros!

You hit on something I hadn't considered and it sounds like a cool idea.

Lets see what else comes up. The OT room might be a place for something like that but maybe a different room could be a suggestion.

Re: To all my Bros!

Maybe a tip of the week or something like that. If I need to make a new tip daily I'll either go completely nutty or lose myself in maintaining the section.

Nice to see the way y'all are thinking!

Re: To all my Bros!

Tip of the week could be cool. You don't have to make every single one Robert ... maybe take some submissions from others?

Re: To all my Bros!

maybe an SD radio station, like the one the Ernie Ball site has?

Re: To all my Bros!

+1 to both Mincer's and RatherDashings posts. A little music review thing would be quiet cool to turn people on to all kinds of music. I know I personally buy numerous amounts cd's of guys you don't hear about on the radio or mtv. I always enjoy breaking down music and writing my thoughts on them so I think it would be right up my alley and I'd be glad to contribute to something like that. Also the radio station would be awesome as well.

How about a podcast instead of a radio station? Every two weeks or month or whatever works best, we could throw some of the best stuff from T&C in there. It would be a great and easy way for everyone to listen to what their fellow forum members are up to.

Re: To all my Bros!

Thanks Robert... an uplifting post that gives us a lot to look up to.

I tried to say that too Mattt. I think banning overtlly confrontational religious posts would be good for this place.

The problem is...

I think there's situation 3 though- Christian posts something smug and "harmless" about religion without actually saying that all nonchristians will burn in hell, but agitating the nerves of nonbelievers so much that they take the bait and go all out with antireligious criticism. Thus a big, retarded debate will start.

I find the atheists are usually more up front and confrontational and don't typically make the two sided comments that backhandedly insult people. That's not a good thing but it is a thing.

This isn't a place for preaching any religion, whether it's a religion or errr not a religion. Preaching on a guitar forum is just ridiculous. It's making people who would otherwise be friends hate each other, people just can't handle it here.

yo, shot out To all my Bros!

I am a full on workaholic, and participate as much as I can...I definitely think this is the best forum in whatever capacity, incarnation, and state it is in and only wish people on it good things!

Re: To all my Bros!

Great thread, guys.

I like most of the ideas presented here, especially the "tip of the week room".

I do not agree with the suggestion to ban another topic. The OT room is the place where you get to meet people on a level that goes beyond music. I mean, we all play guitar, but do we really want to talk about it constantly? Every now and then I want to see what makes other guys here tick and the off-topic room is the place to do that. Now, if we limit the allowable topics it makes that much harder.
Some of the members I like most are strong believers and Christianity is a big part of their lives. If you take away the topic that partially defines them, it makes it near impossible to get to know these people.

IMHO, this place is on the right track. Let's keep it that way.

Re: To all my Bros!

I think a page with a list of each of the Seymour Duncan pickups would be great with the ability to post reviews of the pickups that you've used. Then it would be easy for a guy to quickly get reviews on a pickups. Then, new guys wouldn't need to use the search function. :) But, that may be too HC like.

Maybe a glossary for industry jargon having to do with amps, tubes, effects, and pickups. An FAQ page!

I like the idea of a music learning section with some tutorials. If the tutorials could have video so a noobie could see playing techniques as well as hear would be awesome.

How about a bringing in a pro once a week to talk with about gear, etc? That would be way cool.

Re: To all my Bros!

Personally I liked the "idea" of political or religious discussions, it's just too bad that most of the time those ideas got to out of hand. The reason why I like those threads is because I'm not very well versed in either of those topics, and by hearing other peoples beliefs (whether I agree or not) gave me some new insite with those topics. But I can see from the administrators point of view in that they should'nt have to baby-sit a bunch of adults. It's just a shame that certain topics can't be rationally discussed without personal attacks going on. Kinda how wars get started, ya know? Just my opinion.

Re: To all my Bros!

We did this a year or two ago, let everyone post reviews on pups, then moved them to the Vault. Maybe we should Un-vault them?

or if someone adds a review, I can always merge it into the particular vault review thread.

This was the fist thing that came to my mind as well.
Make a serious SD pickup clip room.I had a hard time figuring out what
Sd pu would be right for me.There is a lot of knowlege about pickups
on this forum but it can be diffecult for a new guy to understand all the talk.
Now that i have 8-9 different SD pus it`s a bit easier
A sticky thread in this room about every model would have been fantastic.
I also think there should be ruules about how the clips should be recorded, one
example: i visited the rio grande homepage looking for some clips.they did all the pu clips in a band setting using all kinds of effects. That did`nt tell me anything about the pu.
I think this would be a major upgrade of our forum

Re: To all my Bros!

Maybe a 20 questions to forum members. Each week, a forum member is selected and asked 20 questions by other members. Get to find out a little bit more about each other, and maybe have a little fun. Questions could range from things like your favourite band etc to what's your favourite pastry or someting...
Just a thought.

+1 I hope this place stays pretty much the same. I can't help but think about that old Cheech & Chong routine - "Sister Mary Elephant". The "class" slowly builds from quiet up to a roar, and then she (the admins) screams "Shuuuut uuuup!" Then we all settle back for awhile.

The only thing I'd like to see is for veteran bros, (and sisters), to be more cognizant of "setting the tone" for newbies. If someone gets out of line, respond with a cool, calculated response. Don't lay your "buttons" out to be pushed. They'll realize quickly that this place is cool, calm, and collected. ;)

P.S. Kudos to the admins for doing such an outstanding job. This place is the coolest spot on the web.

Re: To all my Bros!

I'm assuming all of this falls in the forum not in the main page.

Tutorials: Capital idea. Maybe some topics could be in video form, others might have some audio. Once a week, once a month something like that. I suppose we're talking about technical stuff, like pups and pots, guitar set up and the like. I know I could benifit from it but guitar lessons might seem odd here and not really what SD is about, not that I'd complain mind you. Really excited about this idea.

Podcasts and radio: Doesn't one need an IPoo for a podcast? Just asking, beats the whatever out of me as to how one of those works so I guess I'd prefer radio if that involves getting a new acessory or paid software.

Religion and politics:... well politics is pretty obviouslly a nono and rightly so but I'd like to believe since we come this far as forum members we could come to a point where religious threads could be better dealt with. One of the ways, I believe would be for the original poster to be more involved in the sense that (s)he posts a question and as soon as it's answered or when a thread starts to go bad it gets it gets deleted or closed (by asking a admin, tough it would be nice for the poster to be able to close his own threads sometimes).

I also believe some rules might be worth setting in regards to this. Don't know which one's. Personally all that I find annoying with these threads is that they tend to draw for ever with nothing important being said after a point and when we have one we usually another 3/4 out of the blue.

SD clip room: That would be awesome, the guitars in SD's page are all the same for each type of pup, that gives us an idea on how they sound all else being equal but imagine I want to try a SSL1 in a mahogany strat, someone might have done it before and posted a clip. That would be seriouslly cool.

Contests: Not that I ever win one (too slow and not enough knowledge) but I'd like it if they weren't always just for the U.S. I don't think that was the case ever around here but I've seen brand pages with some great contests and it's kind of like, "Oh, I'm not from the U.S., I'm not an important target for this company." Even if the winner has to pay for his prize's shipping, that would be cool.

Either way, this place is cool as it is. We have some occasional problems but nothing that can't be handled in the most part or that hasn't already been handled.
