To anyone that owns multiple Les Pauls........

Hey guys.

I was just wondering what you guys with multiple LPs use them for? Do you use them in different tunings, different pups, as backup etc?

I ask because at the minute I'm planning a custom LP and I'm thinking about maybe selling my Epi LP with Screamin' Demon/PG pickups as I don't know how much I'd use it compared to my Gibby LP with Seths or my custom LP (may be having C5/PG pups).

Would the Epi LP with it's pups really sound that much different than either of the other LPs? As if it would, then it may be worth me keeping it.

A lot of people seem to collect them because they like having them!

But most people use them for different things. They can have a traditional LP, with seths for instance, and then a metal LP, and a blues LP, etc etc...

The most useful IMO is having them for different tunings. I like messing around with tunings, and I find that having a guitar tuned a whole step down sounds very nice in a lot of cases...

You have to decide how often you'll use the guitars. Doubtless the custom guitar will be of better quality, and have more sentimental value, so you may end up not using the Epi. If that happens, you may decide to get rid of it.

I recommend keeping it for now, but if you end up not using it, sell it. Don't do it now as you may regret it later.

I Have three LPs. My #1 is a 98 std with a C-5/PGn and is JP wired. There isn't much of anything I can't do on that guitar.

The second is a 2001 59 RI with a Jimmy Page set and is also JP wired. This guitar is a little brighter than my #1 and does the classic rock thing better than #1 but it doesn't have the balls to cover the modern rock thing as well as the #1.

The third is a 95 std with an Antiquity set and it is the warmest and has the most bark as well. It is soon to have a set of Phat Cats installed and it will probably become my blues - pushed tone guitar.

Now I have to find another LP for the Antys because thats a tone I'm not willing to sacrifice.

I also have my eye on a Custom Shop limited run Gold Top with P-90s in it. It's pricey but it's a killer sounding and playing guitar and no one else seems to want it. It's a $2k used guitar that really needs a home.

I guess I'll keep my Epi until I see how much use it gets compared to my Gibby and custom LP. Then I can always sell it on and get abit of my money back can't I

It's strange you mentioned your LP with C5/PG and JP wiring, as that's almost exactly what I was thinking of for this custom LP!

I play mainly 60s and 70s style classic rock and blues and was thinking that a C5 loaded LP would be as good as my Seth loaded LP for that style music, but with maybe a slightly heavier output?

2. They all sound differant because:

4. I'm greedy and care more about owning gear sometimes than helping starving children. :smack:

I've got 3 Epi Les Pauls, all with different personalities and looks for different uses. I've got one with a black flame top (rare) loaded with a C5 and 59n. I use this one for drop tunings (usually drop 1/2 or whole step) and this guitar rocks for the heavy stuff. I've got another in honeyburst with a JB and Jazz and this one stays in standard tuning and has a more vintage sound for playing rock blues and Zeppelin and stuff. My other is in amber sunburst and has stock pups. I use this one for clean stuff, blues, and some jazzy stuff.

Same here Lew, but I wondered how anyone with multiples of the same guitar (LPs for example) used them.

After the luthiers quote I'm not sure I can afford to go through with ti afterall, I need to sit down and think about it.

Epi LP in Eb tuning and moving between my other 2 LPs depending what sound I want

Brow, I duno if this counts but all my guitars are "strats" to a point... they are all variations on the design.

2 hums bolt on... they all sound different even though theres one i use the most because it sounds the best! lol

That's what I was thinking about mate, they all sound different

I still may keep my Epi LP IF I get the Custom LP made, i'll have to see how I go with it

I don't have multiple LP's (I wish!), but I do have 3 Teles, I have them for different sounds, though, they are all in the same tuning. I have the rock Frenken-Tele, which has a Jackson Strathead neck, a MIM Nashville body, a 59 at the neck and a QP for Tele at the bridge. I also have my ash Fernandez, with a JD at the bridge and an SM-1 at the neck, which I mostly use for country style stuff. I also have a MIJ 69 RI Thinline that I got because it's so pretty! it's stock now, but I'll probably install a Broadcaster lead and a Vintage rythm for a guitar that jangles, but isn't overly bright.

Bottom line: keep them both for a while and set them up differently. You'll be glad you did.

I have 3 Pauls, which I own because I love them. Honestly, I use my Goldtop (C-5/59) with pullup tonepots and my Honeyflame Std Prem Plus C-5/Seth as my two main LP's. I bought my third cause I raped a $4000 LP Custom Black Beauty off a naive kid for $1300! :laugh2: The Custom is probably the most incredible Paul I've ever owned, but I'm a bit paranoid of tarnishing the gold hardware and dulling the black finish. I still play it once in awhile, so it's got gold C-5/59/59. All of them have 11's in Eb tuning. That way it has the same tension as 10's in standard, and I don't overbend after switching from my strats.

As for other tunings, I use my McCarties. One in standard with stock pickups, and one in Eb dropped low string with C-5/Jazz.

I pick which LP according to what I'm wearing. :laugh2:

I have 2 gibson les pauls and those are my only guitars my #1 is my les paul classic w/ pg/pg and my les paul special faded is obviously my #2 and is stock. lately i have been wanting to sell my #2 and get one of the following guitars like a strat,tele, brian may signiture, p-90 sg, or a regular sg. My opinion, at least in my case, is that if you've got the cash or for some reason hate anything that doesnt have humbuckers, than multiple pauls are good. The reason I say this is that good pauls are a lott-o-cash and once you got a good expensive one you have to spend a bunch of cash to get another than will keep up with your other paul. At a gig, in the time it takes you to switch guitars for different tunings, if your good you could just tune the one you already have on. I would rather have 2 or 3 guitars that are different and can cover everything than have 2 of the same styled guitars that just rival each other, because essentially you will always have one that is better.

Sell one guitar and save up a bunch of cash, thats what I did and I'm only 14, I saved up every penny on my own and work at a grocery store, and trust me, its worth it!! but its true that I don't pay for the roof over my head or the food I eat (at least not all the time) but its still worth it for you

I'm waiting for an email off another luthier at the min, just as a comparision for the quote I've already had.

As I like alot of different sounds, I'll probably end up keeping my Epi LP if only for a backup to my others

I mainly use my '56 RI LP loaded with Duncans P90s , this guitar has huge tone that really rocks.
My hum loaded LPs used to be main axes before I switched to PRS , my '90 std w/A2Ps is the main and the CS class 5 w/59s is the backup.

But I sold my '68 LP to buy a PRS Singlecut (loaded with SLb/'59n) which turned to be my main axe for LP tones . This guitar his it all , huge tone, lightweight, great neck . It's the best LP style guitar I could dream about !
