I personally really liked those faded Vs and Explorers they did. I'd say it's the same build quality (however you take that) as the standard models. I'd take it home at that price even if I couldn't talk them down at all.

I've always been tempted to find one of those used, fine sand it, and spray it in a 60's automotive color.

To finish it properly you have to fill the wood. That is really annoying on a set-neck guitar.

You don't HAVE to fill the wood - I actually like the feel of the non-filled wood of the Fadeds and my #1. It can also look really cool.

It might sound better than dampening the wood with filler, hard to predict. It's not that filling does decent damage to vintage LPs.
