To Cover Or Not To Cover

Hi there. I'm buying new pickups for my son's PRS Santana SE.

I've got it down to two combos, both Dimarzio. The choices are Virtual Hot PAF in the bridge with the Virtual PAF in the neck. Or the Air Norton in the neck with the Air Classic in the bridge. Any opinions on the difference between the two combos are greatly appreciated.

My main question is whether I should get the covers or not. He wants the look of the covered pickups but will the tone really be lost with them.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have any experience with Dimarzio's... I love Duncans.
Many feel that covers don't make much of a difference. I think a pickup without a cover tends to be a little brighter, and perhaps cleaner.

That tends to be what you'll get from most everyone. Even in the worst case, it will be a very, very small change similar to above.

from my experience, you get a tiny bit of noise from covers that you don't get with open coils.
