To Shield or Not

Should I shield control cavity and pickup routes on a two humbucker guitar? I don't think I'll ever run a single split coil.

Re: To Shield or Not

How noisy is it? I usually only shield my problem guitars or ones that are gonna be on the road in potentially noisy environments.

Another thing to consider is that the noise that's created by splitting won't be blocked by shielding. Unless the pickups are covered, in which case the cover itself is a shield.

Re: To Shield or Not

Are the control cavities and/or humbucker routes shielded in Gibson and PRS guitars? My question is really about what is usually done.

Re: To Shield or Not

A lot of the time. They usually do it with conductive paint though. Another thing to consider is that often times shielding the pickup cavity can mess with Eddy currents which has a similar effect tonally to adding a cover on the pickup.

Re: To Shield or Not

Unless you are getting RF interference, don't bother.

And never use the tape, always the paint (and several layers).

Re: To Shield or Not

Just search "Carbon Conductive Paint" on Amazon. I use the one they have labeled as "Amazon's Choice" and it works fine.

Re: To Shield or Not

Paints is irreversible. Tape is OK, but it should be double-side conductive. But, in any case, don't.

Re: To Shield or Not

Don't, you'll waste your time, and potentially damage your guitar.

Paint won't damage your guitar. And if you have humbuckers, shielding will make a dimmer switch and neon sign loaded bar a lot more pleasant to play at.

Re: To Shield or Not

I don't know if you need to, unless you are near something that causes interference. I don't, unless I notice noise, or I am playing somewhere that always causes a hum. So I keep some copper tape on hand. But I wouldn't invest the $$ (both tape and paint is expensive) if I never noticed a problem.

how about using shielded wires? This should eliminate all the radio frequency interference. Also laptops are a problem for those of us whose whole rig is in a laptop.

Re: To Shield or Not

I put copper tape in my LP and it's dead silent now, was a buzzer before.

I put it in my strat and I think it made the noise worse..probably did something wrong

Re: To Shield or Not

I don't shield unless I feel the need to, you can live without it. If it hums and hisses bad, shield it, if it is ok, don't waste your time.

Usually they make some difference for the longer wires, but it's not really worth shielding the shorter ones. Another thing to consider is shielded wire has slightly more capacitance. Not a lot more, twice as much as your output cable, but if two extra feet of cable makes you're guitar too dark, it's not for you.
