"The red pigment used for the current Les Paul Standards is designed to maintain its coloration and not fade, whereas, the Custom Shop Historic Reissues use red aniline dye that can bleed into the binding and fade as time goes on." Gibson Customer SupportThe Golden Boy said:Seriously, why not?
The red dye tends to fade when it's subjected to sunlight. When people get new Les Pauls and complain about the red bleeding into the binding, the quickest, easiest and best solution is to leave the guitar in the sun for a little while.
You'll see on old Les Pauls, fading where sunlight has been able to "bleach" the finish- such as under the pickguard, under the switch ring and mounting rings. However a lot of the fading was done right away when dealers recieved the guitars. There's still a phenomenon of the "switch tag" which was a little paper pamphlet that hung off the selector switch- to this day, there are guitars that you can see the shadow of where that tag hung on the guitar while it was hanging, new, in the shop 47 years ago.
