Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Right there with ya' bro. That is now just a pleasant memory for me unless I want to pay for young girls, which I don't. Oh to be 21 again and know what I know now.

Troof... As much as the Cher song nauseates me.... If I could turn back time....

That thing is gonna be delux.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

OK, now let's see the binding around the headstock.
Since this is a first, might as well go all out.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Funny you bumped this. I actually polished up he headstock paint and wired it up last night. Pics later today with the grand revealing

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Many things on this build are a first for me, so many little mistakes that I will chalk up to experience.

Don't ream out your tuners holes after you paint and then wet sand.

The wood swelled and we gots waves!

I was able to sand it back down and shoot another couple coats of clear. Easy fix, but a little panic there. :D

So remember the Warmoth Thinline Tele build? I bought this body at the same time and kept watching the showcase to see if a matching neck with the specs I wanted would pop up.

I finally gave up and order an Allparts neck with the large headstock.

I loaded it up with a WLH set and Gotoh bridge.

Still tweaking the setup, but it came out pretty cool I think.

I wanted to combine the look of the Fender Starcaster with the Coronado.

So far so good. I am have messing with the heights somewhat. The lower strings have some fuzz on them that I am not sure I like just yet.

I thought the WLH were too bright in my '07 LP, so I swapped in a set of Seths so put the WLH in here.

I literally uploaded the pictures and then sat down to set the intonation and break in the strings. I will have a better idea in a couple of days.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

BEAUTIFUL!!

Love, love, love the limba.

I had the same thing happen to me with the wood swelling around control pot holes in the body once. Scared the living daylights out of me. I gave it several days to totally dry out and shrink down as much as it would, then did the same thing you did with sanding and several more coats of clear. What I do now to prevent that from happening after wet sanding again is after drilling the holes (or routing the back of the control cavity), I literally flood the holes with thinned sanding sealer to get it to soak way into the wood. Then I paint on several more thick layers of sanding sealer to the insides of the holes. I haven't had a problem since.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Normally I would have reamed out the headstock and installed the tuners during mockup, but I jumped ahead with the painting. Dumb mistake that was easily fixed.

It is not like I have a clue what I am doing or anything. I make this up as I go along.

Played it a fair bit last night while tweaking and the WLH definitely work better here than the LP they were in. The narrower nut is also not nearly noticeable as I had feared. AP did not offer a 1 11/16" option with the '70's headstock.

The neck is quite stable and the frets needed no leveling. I have buzz free action down to .060", but raised it back up to around .070". The pickup rings I had trimmed down (height) during mockup, but they still need to drop a bit. The bridge pickup is flush with the top of the ring, but still only about 2mm from the string.

I had no intention of building anything hollow (semi?), but the body was so cool looking and Warmoth was blowing it out. The guy who took my order said it was the oldest body in stock at over 400 days!

I wanted a mishmash of a Jazzmaster, Starcaster, and Coronado with the styling. A million little mistakes on the neck but all in all, a very cool project.

Honestly... you suck! And I’m not jealous of the guitar or the skills, however your balls are another story!

Looks stunning, congrats on a fantastic job!

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

Let us revisit, shall we?

Pro tip, don't use clip-on tuners with fresh lacquer.

There were a million little things I was not happy about with the headstock paint, but I ignored them until my tuner left an impression.

Heat gun time! :D

The heat gun made quick work of the lacquer and left the sanding sealer intact.

More black

Since I was going to all this trouble, I decided a more appropriate decal would be nice. The body shape is a Fender Starcaster, but the headstock is Jazzmaster. The look I went for was a combination of the Starcaster, Coronado II, and the Jazzmaster.

So I got with Scott @ GuitaRestore and he combined all the ideas to create a custom decals for me.

The inspiration

Now buried under much clear and presently drying. :D

Oh, and I added a guard

I highly recommend GuitaRestore for custom decals. Scott is a very cool guy who takes great pride in his work.

Re: Today's episode of In The Workshop, Balls of Steel Edition.

. . . damn!!!!

Not jealous, not of the skills, not of the resulting guitar (and I don't even care for any kind of hollows) not of the experience, not of anything at all. Nope, not me sir, not a bit... said no-one ever :D

Congrats man and enjoy her in good health!!! :headbang:
