I have one of these, and the stock crummy PU sounds WAY thin. The body is Pine / neck is Maple. Sounds like a thin SG. I want to fatten it up. Pearly Gates perhaps ?

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

No way - Tokai Billy Gibbons? Pine body!?!?!?!?! No way also! Tokai sucks? Are you sure? Billy G = PG...but if that's what the guitar is -PINE- get a new guitar, not new pups!!!!

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

It's a set-neck HONDO made by the JAP TOKAI people, and it looks like something that might have been designed by the guys that produced the Wily Coyote cartoons for Warner Bros. GREAT QUALITY as far as build. How can I get a pic out there ? You'll see.

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

I assume it's got buckers?!

The PG is a great pickup but not really ideal for a thin body/thin sounding guitar...maybe a Custom or Custom Custom, that said the PG's are great, I have several and I love them all!

Also, FWIW, the earliest tele's were made from Pine and they sound killer!

whew - thanks. I was thinking Tokai made a Les Paul Lemon! I'd Love to have a Billy Gibbons tribute axe! Now I see...I was getting ready to do a major search for the Tokai BG model!!!!!!!!!

Hondo: SuperDistortion and rock on!

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

I heard that early tele's were made of pine too.

Before Fender, Alder wasn't a tonewood. It was used to build cabinets and Fender used it since it was readily available and cheap

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

The original Telecasters were made of pine? That's interesting. :6:

What was the neck wood used on the original Pine Teles? Still all maple neck and board?

Re: Tokai Billy Gibbons Model / Coyote

The necks were indeed Maple with NO truss rod on the very first few prototypes, 3 on a side tuners too. Some very early Esquires as well. When warped necks started coming back to Fender , LEO bought himself another router and started using truss rods, and the rest is history.........

Supposedly some of the earliest Teles had pine bodies.

The prototype Tele had a pine body and a peghead shaped like the K & F and Fendr lap steels. Lew

Tokai made great guitars and many great guitars have been made out of pine.
Dont get rid of it as they can be very collectible. I have a beat up old tokai strat which is my all time fav number 1 and i played now for 44 years.

You just need to find this one a voice. if the guitar is bright match it with a pickup with a low resonant frequency. It will sound great with dark sounding humbuckers. Look at the duncan specs and choose one by description and its resonant frequency. When you have a couple in mind post back here and ask. Make sure you detail exactly the type of sound you want and the players who sound like you want to..
