I was just playing both of my Gibson style guitars through the same amp settings in both neck positions just to compare the Hybrid Jazz/59 A4 pickup to this Dimarzio VPAF A5 N....
The Tokai Love Rock has the Jazz/59N A4
The Gibson SG has the Dimarzio VPAF N
The Jazz/59 Hybrid has a flatter tone and lacks the 3D tone of the VPAF....The Jazz/59 is perfect in it's EQ though, isn't boomy in the lows, has a softer presentation, nice chimey, clean highs, and less overall output...This pickup is great in the neck of my Tokai...This pickup is both soft, clean, and clear and not at all too direct..I feel the A4 does a nice job of making you feel like you're in fact playing an aged vintage wound neck pickup with this hybrid...
The VPAF has great highend chime, and strong cutting mids, and is tight with strong lows.(This pickup is very authoritive)..I Like everything overall about this pickup, except for the strong lows! This pickup has a very cool liveliness that the Jazz/59 lacks and it's a powerful pickup and pretty direct...Note articulation is wonderful in the highs and mids, but the lows are very woofy on the wound E and A strings...I've lowered the bass side a bit and have brought the E and A screws up a bit...It helped, but I'm still not 100% satisfied....Maybe another swap to an A4 would be the fix again? An A5 is just too powerful in the neck for my tastes and I have to keep the pickup very low....With an A4 I'm able to bring the neck pickup closer to the strings and lose some of that "woof".......I want to stay with this VPAF because I Love the double creme pickups in both positions...
Is there anything I can screw up on the Dimarzio VPAF if I decide to swap to an A4 as far as the "air technology" is concerned? Are there little spacers or anything that might pop out at me upon sliding out the magnet?
