Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

My Tokai Love Rock in transfering and getting more vintage specs as time goes by. The original switch started to act a little wierd so I decided to do a rewiring with a Fake58 wiring kit. CTS Pots, Switchcraft switch and jack, vintage braided wire etc.

This project was alot more complicated than I first though it would be... Biggest problem was the metric to imperial conversion.

I removed the original wiring hassle and tried installing a pot. First problem was that the pot didn't fit in the hole, it was too large. So I took a pen and taped sandpaper around it and sanded the holes 'til they were large enough. When I finally got the holes big enough I faced the next problem. I should have ordered long shaft pots not short shaft that I had ordered. So I had to sand down the "rough" parts of paint and wood inside the cavity, cut the little metal pieces that is sticking up from CTS pots and replace the washer that "should" be on the cavity side with a thinner one...

EDIT! Guitar has now got the name "Thursday Burst". Here's a link to a "report site" I've made about it!

...Finally the pots fitted in there after some work :D But as you see it was REALLY tight.

This is how it ended up after a little work with the soldering iron. (The wires to the switch are a too long though, they got cutted later on) I wired it up with the 50's wiring mod of course since that's what I'm shooting for here ;)

Next problem was when I was about to install the switchcraft switch. Which as alot less threads than the original. In other words the maple top was all too thick for this switch...

So I faced the fact that I had to sand the top thinner from inside the cavity. Which neither was really easy, it was very tight so I had to tape sandpaper onto a gluestick and use that to reach down and sand. IT TOOK A CRAZY LOT OF TIME! to get this done.

Almost there ;)

I finally got it sanded enough to just fit the original nut that came with the switch so that it'll hold in place until I recieve the deepthreaded nut that I ordered today together with new gold bell knobs (to fit the CTS pots) and a amber switchtip.

Now the question. Did it make any difference to the tone of the guitar? The answer is "Yes it did!" It's fuller, more complex and harmonic sounding and and the knobs are alot more useful. Doesn't go muddy as fast as before! Overall I enjoy the guitar ALOT more now, not that I didn't enjoy it before but it's even better now! :D

that's really excellent work ... the guitar is so attractive - glad to read that it sounds even better now

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

I would have gotten long shaft pots and a deep-thread switch nut to save the extra work and avoid sanding through the shielding paint in the cavities--but it looks great. Congrats!

That kit looks similar to the one Acme Guitarworks sells. I've never used the Fake 58 kit--I need to check it out.

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

Do you use one of those hollow aluminum stop tailpieces? I tried them and I liked how it affected the tone.

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

Sounds like it was just what the doctor ordered. I bet it was a major improvement. Good looking work, bro.

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

Thanks guys! This was my second guitar soldering project. I did the Lite Ash Tele last week, and that was my first. (Almost first soldering project ever)

It's a '05 MIJ Tokai Love Rock LS80.

The deepthread nut is on it's way, I've ordered it allready. But the maple top was still too thick so I'd have to sand it anyway.

I know about the pots, should have ordered the longshaft one's but I didn't realize it. I read somewhere that the shortshafts was the one to get from MIJ Tokais. And indeed the did fit, but it was very tight as said. But if I'd do it again I'd get longshafts.

Haven't got the Aluminium Feather Weight Tailpiece yet. But I'm going to install one in the future. I guess that's the next mod after this :)

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

I´ve said it before, and I´ll say it until I die: Sometimes just an electronics mod (or swap) can make the difference between good and superb. Glad to hear it worked out for you :)

And JMIA: We want to Move it, Move it... bring back the Lemurs :headbang::laugh2:

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

You're completely right about that Zerb!

Some comparsion and proof about the changes!

Here's a quick recording over ratherdashings Heavy Blues I just made:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=309222&songID=3823828

Compare it to this one, a blues backing that I made some time ago:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=309222&songID=3760853

Both recordings are done with the neck pickup and settings are exactly the same, just a little delay added on the lead over ratherdashing backing, otherwise the same!

Noticed the deeper, richer sound of the lead playing and the "unintentional" pinch harmonics just squealing out of the guitar now? :laugh2:

I love it!

She's a beauty! How 'bout some full body shots?

I have an '05 MIJ LS150 I like very much.

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

I don't have the new knobs that I ordered yesterday yet. So she's knobless, and I can't show it off knobless ;) :laugh2:

Anyway here are some old shots from my homepage:

The new knobs will be not as amber as in these pictures though.

What did ya think of the tone comparsion soundclips, any difference to you at all? They weren't the best one's for tone comparsion though. Might be that I'm the only one who really notice any difference. It's hard to capture subtle tone changes that also includes changes in how the guitar feels.

The LS150 is a couple of steps higher up in their model line, right? Is yours stock or have you made any mods to yours?

As you notice in the full body pics I've also changed the trussrod cover to a original bellshaped gibson. And also topwrapped the tailpiece, I liked the way it changed the feel especially when bending notes.

Yeah, The LS-150 has a couple upgrades. One being it already came with upgraded electronics...Switchcraft, Orange Drops, CTS etc. All I had to do was a pickup swap. I have a '59 in the neck and I've swapped the bridge p'up a couple times. I have the Brobucker in it now.

Oh, and I changed the trussrod cover for a Gibby bellshape also.:beerchug:

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

Yup, when I changed the pots and wiring on my lp, the cleans got a whole lot nicer. I'm going to replace the switch wire because the old stuff is just crap and the signal has to go through that (unlike the grounding wire).

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

hehe! thanks Closed Eye...

Got some pics for us PoorMan? I MUST see yours :D

You know, I think my wife has a digital camara around here somwhere. I'm a terrible photographer, but I'll see if I can get some photos up this weekend.

Re: Tokai Love Rock Modding (PICS)

I'm looking forward to some pics PoorMan! Don't worry about how good a photographer you are. Take the pics in the sun without flash! Then they should turn out quite well!

I namned my Love Rock "Thursday Burst" and that's the name it will go under from now :laugh2:. Here's a report page I made about it! It's the first release of it so it would be great if you guys could tell me what you think of it and report if you find any grammar problems or other wierd stuff!

Thanks :D

I had the same problem when I re-wired my Edwards LP, but it turned out good in the end...
