welll im saying this because ive been looking at teels for a long time now, ands really wanting to buy one that was american but i might just go MIM and get it even sooner than planned. I just thought ti was interetsing that tom used a mim tele. I myself have a MIM strat and love it to death. And personally to me i think the tele is the second best single cut away out there aside to the les paul of course, but i cant affrod that anywho.

Fender was NOT making guitars in Mexico in 1982. If it's a MIM tele, it's only within the last few years.

In 1982 Fender was making guitars in Japan. They built their Squier guitars in Japan. I have a 1986 Squier and it's built better than the american guitars of that year. I bought it in 1998 for $300. They were built as good as Ibanez, ESP., etc... Later, Fender put their name on the headstock, and the Squiers became very low end beginner guitars.

The MIJ Fenders have gone up in value a little and used ones tend to be more expensive than new MIM.

Regardless, you can get great tones out of inexpensive, quality guitars. Investing your money in a better amp will improve your tone alot more

Tom's tone is very cool and his effects and technique are out of control. IMO, the biggest component is the original Digitech Whammy Pedal. That thing does some crazy stuff with your guitar tone. I first heard about it from Trey's (Phish) road use. If they still make it, you can get decently close to some of Tom's tones.

Yep, thought so. In fact a little digging around reveals that the Mexican Fender plant was opened 16 years ago, which would be about 1988.

hmm intersting i guess guitar world is wrong? Does any one have the october issue with them to veerify this? Accoridng to the one i own it says 1982 made in mexico. Hmm very bizzarre maybe they got the date wrong?

I saw the same issue! As much as I like the high end stuff, there really are some nice, cheaper alternatives out there. My philosophy is simple: If "YOU" like it, buy it. Thats all that matters in the end!
