My band covers "Testify" by Rage, and for the solo i've been taking my cable out of the input jack on my geetar and wackin the bridge with it while working the wah pedal. It produces a wacky/ pitchy screech that i think morello creates in the actual song. For whatever reason, it stopped working. I tried switching cables and using the bridges/pickups of other guitars, but now it always just makes a loud buzzing sound that still changes with wah but isn't all tom-morello-y and sick. any thoughts? thanks

Did you add a noise gate or some other type of effect to your rig?

It depends where you hold the lead too, if you are holding it by the metal, than some of the signal goes through you into the ground. Did you get a new pair of shoes around the time it stopped working by any chance?

I thought he did that solo with his Whammy not a wah? huh. No I must go try this!!

EDIT: I got a lot of buss, but no squeal. I think it is his whammy.

hmm i didn't add anything to my rig, but my guit is a g & l legacy (aka strat not tele) so maybe that's why it stopped working? hmm i'll look into how i'm holding it though. thanks guys

Hope you solve this problem, but in my opinion, I think RATM/Audioslave covers should not have the solos completely copied from the original track. I'd try to make my own unique solo, kind of an effort to top the original solo. Because these songs are famous for having such weird guitar sounds, how is it unique again when you just play exactly what Morello plays?

i totally agree... my band covered bulls on parade a few years back, and instead of using what he did (which is really hard to get right) i tried my own weird noises. it was awesome!

No, he unplugs the guitar cable and makes contact with his telecaster bridge while sweeping the wah pedal. I've seen him do it. He did it live on Letterman when they played Testify there, try YouTube-ing it, I'm sure it'll be there.

Yeah, that's what I did and al I got was loud buzzing and wah sweep sound, but it wasn't squealy or anything like in the actual song. I think he may be using his whammy rather than a wah.

or both. Pitch shifting the squeal by 2 octaves and rocking the wah.

Yes it certainly is!! And what a co-incedance that you ask that as it was at a taping of the hour, which when we went to a different one, Tom Morello was a guest on the show!!! You asked that question in the perfect thread!! My mom is in the centre and 2 of my friends are also in the pic, one who is a HUGE fan of Strombo (ever since he was on 102.1 The Edge) and the other (with the long blonde hair) is like a brother to me.
