Tonal differences between Greenbacks and G12H30s?

What are the tonal differences between these two speakers? I've heard they sound basicly alike, but the G12H30 is louder and doesn't have as much speaker breakup, while the Greenback isn't as loud and has more speaker breakup because of the smaller magnet. Are there any other differences between the two? Thanks!

I'd add that the Greenbacks are known for great mids, and the G12H30 is known for a strong bottom

I know this has been mentioned before but I`ll ask , how might those two speakers sound mixed together in a 2x12 cab? I know the G12H has been known to work well with the Vintage 30 but I`ve never been crazy about that speaker.

I run this set up in both my 2x12 combo, and my 2x12 cab- the H30 is louder, but you can still hear the GB- the reason I run this set up, is because the I prefer to mic the GB - but I need the loudness of the H30 to hear myself through the stage wash- we don't put the guitars in the monitors- so our amps are all we use to hear on stage- It works for me.
IMO 2 H30s are a bit bright together- so I mix one with a GB, and they sorta work with each other-if I need more, I add the Cab. When I run the combo sits on the cab- the speakers are arraigned in an X pattern.

This is partially because the G12H30 was intended for bass guitar right?

G12H30 doesn't break up as much, and it feels tighter
The Greenback is sweeter and not as tight in the bass

At lower volumes I would prefer the green's
When cranking, G12H30 gives you THE tone

Greenback: lower output/not as loud. not as much bass. more crunch. more break-up. more honk. handles 25 watts.

The problem I have is, all my favorite songs were recorded with Greenbacks (Cream, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Bluesbreakers, etc), but I'd have to get a cabinet of at least two of them to work with the amp I'm getting. In which case I'd probably have to get the head version of the amp I'm getting (Peavey Classic 30). Or, I could get the combo with a G12H30.

The head and cab would cost me more, but if the tone is that much better I'll definetly go for it. What would you suggest to go for those classic tones mentioned above (Other then the correct guitar , I'm working on that part, but new amp comes first)?

are you SURE that all of your favorite songs were recorded with greenback? If we are to belive the Marshall ads, a lot of those great late sixties cabs were actually loaded with H30's. I have one of the Heritage H30's in my 18w. It dohave da tone, but like Olin said, it only has one speed......LOUD!!!!!!!!!!!!:laugh2: If you have the space and the cash, get the Heritage......by they way, they also make a greenback version that is about $10 cheaper.......but still $200 discounted:smack: if yo olike the H30, anybody have any input regarding the Hellatone 30?

Something to bear in mind about the Greenback is that it sounds alot deeper in a 4 x 12 sealed cab than it does in an open back combo amp. In an open back cab the G12H30 is a better choice, IMO. You'll get a fuller, deeper tone. The G12H30 sounds great at any volume, BTW. You don't have to play it super loud. I use them in my blackface Deluxe Reverbs and played at lower volumes they sound great with cleanish tones...cranked they sound great with more distorted tone too. They are very versatile speakers.

Also, consider the Eminence Wizard...it's a G12H30 clone, sounds fabulous and is only $79.99.

The Emm Private Jack is a Greenback clone but with deeper bass and more power handling than a Celestion Greenback...a very nice improvement, IMO, and only $84.99.

They're also made in the good ol' USA...NOT CHINA.

The Hellatone is nothing more than a broken in H30-
I don't know for sure, but my intuition tells me that Dave got a good deal on a bunch of H30's, but by agreement, he isn't allowed to sell them as H30's. Don't quote me on that.
Hence, he breaks them in, slaps a Hellatone sticker on them, and sells them at a great price- I once saw a post where someone peeled the sticker off of his hellatone, and it was indeed an H30.

He's probably doing the acetone trick. You play some music through the speaker while applying acetone with a brush to the sticky dope Celestion uses on the surround of the speaker. The acetone disolves and removes some of the dope and also softens the edge surround. Makes the speaker sound deeper. Matchless did a similar process to the Vintage 30's they use in the SC-30 and Chieftan.

It's a good trick and also works well on the Jensen Reissue speakers that are made in Italy.

I don't mean the one I have now isn't right, anything but that, it's the best strat I've played, in my opinion better then the Eric Johnson I compared it to in the store (*puts up shield :laugh2: *). I mean correct guitar for those tones, in this case, Les Paul, or other humbucker-equipped guitars. But this strat covers all of those too! The only thing that could possibly make it better is a set of Duncans :banana:

a jmp and a 4x12 with h30's or eminence wizards. Personally i'd go for the wizards

may also get a TS, just for versatility reasons, if you're not getting enough of something you prolly can with a ts

I am thinking of loading up a 2 x 12 with either the Hellatones or Wizards. Or maybe a mix of Wizard and Private Jack. Any suggestions? I like the looks of the Mojo closed back Bluesbreaker type cab......and they will even sell me the Marshall logo so it wil match the head:fingersx:
