Tonal Differences: Celestion Vintage 30 vs. Greenback vs. G12H

To those that have owned and can compare these, how do each of the speakers compare to the other, as in EQ, smoothness, cleans, crunchy, overdriven, etc? I'm planning to buy a 412 soon (probably a Mojo Tone 412) and load it with speakers. I play mainly a blues-rock / alternative style through a Mesa/Boogie Rectoverb Combo with a Les Paul, for reference.

Thanks guys,
Nathan

Check out the American made Eminence stuff like the Patriot or Man-O Wars. I think they sound just as good but in a much better built product.

They're both great speakers. Supposedly the V30s are more in your face, big bottom, nice mids and the G12H30 smoother, sweeter, great mids & highs.

I have a 4X12 with two V30's on the bottom and two G12H30s on the top and it's the best sounding cab I've ever had in 26 years of playing. It makes my Crate Blue Voodoo sound vintage when eq'd that way and shred when eq'd that way. Other suggestions are to put them in in an X pattern in the cab.

I got a guy I work with who I'm letting come over and load some Eminence V12's ( lots like the V30, just a bit harsher with the Crate) and the Celestion mix in his cab to see how he likes it. See if you know anyone with these speakers and put your amp thru their cab.

Hope this helps.

This is a great post and I'd agree 100% with the info about both Celestions..

Check out Bob Savage's speaker clips of the Greenback, Classic lead 80, G12T-75, G12H-30, and Vintage 30's. Look under "Amplifier Demo's>Bogner Amplifiers" @ www.bobsavage.net Enjoy.

Re: Tonal Differences: Celestion Vintage 30 vs. Greenback vs. G12H

Hey guys, I've never played a greenback speaker before, but I own a g12h-30. I'm considering switching the v30 in my cab to a greenback. What tonal differences could I expect between the greenback and the g12h-30?

Re: Tonal Differences: Celestion Vintage 30 vs. Greenback vs. G12H

You know, I really thought I hated the G12T-75's, but I just put them back into my JCM 800 combo, and they are really really nice. Good crunch, nice and crisp on the top end without being harsh, and the mids are just right (altough they are 20 years old and WELL broken in!!). I guess my ears and taste have changed over the years, because I used to LOVE the smoothness of the V30's, but as of late they didn't have enough "bite".

The V30's will definately give you a smoother sound if that's what you are going for.

Have you listened to the Bob Savage speaker comparison clips ? Hearing is believing.

Re: Tonal Differences: Celestion Vintage 30 vs. Greenback vs. G12H

The Vintage 30 would be the brightest and have the clearest mids and less bass than the G12H30 but more bass than the Greenback. It's a very efficient speaker and will usually make an amp sound louder, clearer and punchier. A great speaker in a Deluxe Reverb.

The G12H30 is similar to the V30, but has more bass, more mids, chunkier/crunchier mids, and smoother highs with plenty of treble but with less edge than the Vintage 30. It's also a very efficient speaker and will also improve the performance of any amp. It's my favorite speaker in a Deluxe Reverb.

The Greenback is more efficient than most speakers (more efficient than a Jensen C12N for example) but not as efficient as the V-30 and G12H30. It'll usually be an improvement over most stock speakers, but it's not as loud or clear as the V30 or G12H30. Of three the Greenback has the least bass but the prominant mids and a nice crunchy/chunky honk that is classic 60's Marshall!

Of the three my favorite is the G12H30, then the V-30 and then the Greenback.
