Tonal variances of Celestion V30 & G12H ?

Hey all,

I would like to ask for you to please give me your personal observations on these two speakers & how they vary. Please include equipment used in conjunction with them. I know this may have been covered before, but could you please indulge me. :)

My main reason for asking is I have an Orange 2x12 cab (closed back, super solid construction) with 2 V30s and was wondering what a swap of one or both w/G12hs would do for my overall tone. I've heard many times that a combo of these two produces wonderful results. Thanks in advance.

Peace,

Darrin

Darrin,

Im a bit biased 'cause I dont like the V30 at all. My observations are :

- Stiff cone (and sound)
- Pronounced mids
- Harsh tone

Of course, it is my personal preference and observation. I had a hard time finding a nice sweet tone out of this speaker. Im mostly into classic rock. I have a 2x12, it was matched with a G12H30. I MUCH prefer the G12M/G12H combo, which I currently have.

Both the clean and overdriven tones weren't for me. I heard it matches pretty well with some low powered EL84 amps, like the Classic 30 and such.

However, it worth a try. You can trade Celestion speakers quite easily.

Darrin,
I haven't used Celestions, but the first place I saw the V30/ G12H 30 combo was on Dr Z cabs - he claimed the lows of the G12H combined with the crunch of the V30 were a great compliment for each other

They are both great speakers and you can find any number of stellar guitarists who prefer one or the other.

I think the the V 30 might be louder and cleaner and seem to have slightly less bass and mids and a brighter tone. Sounds great in a sealed cab though and in a sealed cab it doesn't lack bass to my ears. In an open back cab, the G12H30 is the better choice...it has plenty of bass in either an open back or closed back cab.

The G12H30 has thicker, chonkier mids and seems to have a fuller deeper tone.

If the V30 sounds to bright to you or seems to need a little more girth to the mids, adding a g12H30 will bring those tonal qualities to your tone.

I like both and if the G12H20 wasn't around I'd be happy just using the V30. But I prefer the fuller tone of the G12H30 and that's the one I have in both of the Deluxe Reverbs.

Go for the mix! You'll love it. If you need a 16 ohm G12H30 I have two. I'd sell one...or both.

Thanks, Lew

I have that very combo in my Avatar 2x12 (Mesa Rectoverb Series I sits atop the cab) and it does exactly what Curly just spoke of, great lows from the G12H, mids from the V30, and smooth highs from both. I love 'em.

First, it's a good mix. I have them in my 4x12 with Budda and Marshall heads and it does sound really good. Second, unless your dead set on Celestions, try a set of the new Eminence Governors. Like V30's without the "spike". Very open, yet british sounding. They are not too expensive either.

I should add that if you're into modern rock/metal the V30 is a great choice.

Ditto to what Curly and Lew said. I have a Dr. Z MAZ-38 with that combo and the 2 sound great together in that amp.

Re: Tonal variances of Celestion V30 & G12H ?

Remember that 2 v30's = 120 watts.
One v30 and one g12h30 = 60 watts.

I bought a 2x12 with the same combo (v30/g12h30), havent gotten it yet tho...
