I recorded my poor version of "Love Thing" by Satch..not the whole song.

Which sound do you like best, which do you think suits me better? I know where I feel more comfortable, just want to check different views out :)

#1

#2

#2 BY FAR!!!

It's smoother and has more harmonic complexity. This tone makes me want to play my guitar. The equalization of this tone sits better in the mix as well.

Very nice playing, btw. I can tell from the difference in note choice and phrasing that you like #2 better as well. (I might be wrong, but I never am. ;))

Prefer the #2, definitely.

Nice work, man!

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

Number one kinda reminds me of the actual recording, somehow..

Number two is amazing though.
So let us in, what's the secret? What's the difference. The second one was recorded on a 3 watt solid state beginners amp or something?

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

Hehe, thanks for participating!

The first one is Ibanez RG2570 directly into the Engl Screamer and the second one is the MI Audio Tube Zone pedal into the Screamer, same guitar.

Both miced up with a SM57 and same guitar.

It was bedroom level so I can't blame the Screamer but I feel more comfortable just with the amp, it's more direct and I like the aggressive thing, it's sounds better in a band situation.

Yeah, the Tube Zone is **** smooth but somehow I make more mistakes when I use this one lol :D

I figured yesterday out which compressor works good in Cubase for the guitar track and it would be a bit different now but wouldn't change the tone, just make it more present.

At the moment I like dirty sounds and the "ugly" frequencies of the Screamer would be beaten down by other instruments in the band and of course, I could crank it more.

Hopefully I can take the Screamer to a friend who has a 2x12 cab with Greenbacks and check it out.

I also think that the MI Audio pedal would sound better at louder volumes...louder -> less bass in my experience, so it would take the little mud away.

And last but not least, this ballad needs a smooth sound but it's not something I play everyday....aaaaaaaaaah this tone search kills me someday.

Cheers!

They're both different, but I like them both...The first reminds me of the smooth sound of a saxophone...the second has a really nice crisp clear tone. Good job on both though.

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

I like 2 about 406 times more than 1. I can't believe it's the same amp/guitar.

How different were the settings? What were your settings on #2? It's amazingly smooth.

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

the # 2 winns on soul ,the #1 winns on clarity and smoothness..On that particular song ,#2 would be my choice...

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

Certainly #2, it has better tone and feel. (though #1 ain't bad either, perhaps more faithful to the original)

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

I think I actually like the first one a bit more, but you should have turned up the lead track. Good playing and tone on both, though.

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

The first one sounded a bit "clerical" to me, it was a bit too clean and precise. The second one had a warmer voice to me, sounded much, much better to my ears.

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

Definitely #1 is the best sound. No doubt about it. #2 sounds kind of colored and more distorted. The first one sounds saturated but not artificial like #2. I really like the 1st one a lot. #2 is good, but #1 kills #2. What kind of amp was it?

Hey, if you want to call great tone "clinical" that's your prerogative. To me, that's excellent tone. I want whatever that was.

#2 is clearer and brighter, but #1 just flows very easily. #2 at times sounds like it was more work to keep it together and moving forward.

Re: Tone 1 or Tone 2? You can choose

Hehehe, thanks for checking!

@edsmith: I used the Engl Screamer 50 Combo for the #1 clip. Distortion channel with gain around 9 o'clock, if I remember correctly.

@idsnowdog: yeah, you're right. Don't know why but it's more difficult to play with the pedal.
