Tone Control Mods?!??

Hey guys, i have a mod i thought of all by myself (yay) that i call the "Super TBX Control" mod which consists of a TBX pot and a few resistors and capacitors and it really works great! ..I was wondering if anyone has done this before???

Well since its a TBX control it has the best of all three pots (250, 500, and 1meg) simply because the control itself is a 250k pot from numbers 1-5 (on the tone knob) then theres a little detent that clicks at # 5 which turns the pot over to the 1 meg side of the pot, then from about 6-10 the you can increase the treble which you cant do with a normal tone control. Also, there is a greasebucket tone circuit in this mod too which makes it so when your tone pot is turned all the way off there is no muddiness in the tone which ALSO happens with a normal tone control. So to sum it up, its a normal 250k tone control from 1-5, then from about 5-7 1/2 its a 500k pot, then from about 7 1/2 -10 its a 1 meg pot that goes almost completely "No-Load) at 10 which is great because in order to do that normally you have to use the delta tone pot or NOT wire your pickup to a tone control. Its just an extremely versatile mod that can go from super dark and bassy to VERY bright depending on what you want!

Hahaa thank you man. I put ALOT of time and thought into this mod and i think it might really be the most usable tone control you can have before resort to active electronics. If you ever feel up to it try it out one day, its great!!

So, if I'm reading this right, you have the input of the tone pot coming from the PU selector switch? Do you have the lead from the PU going to vol pot, then to selector sw, then TBX tone pot? Where is the lead to the output jack?

Ahh good question, well i used this mod on a HSS strat as both tone controls, one for the middle/neck and the other for the bridge only. On my strat the lead comes from the pickups, to the volume pot, to the the selector and THEN the TBX pot as you said. Its the same way for both of my tone controls. And the lead to the ouput jack on my guitar comes from the volume pot to also further answer your question

Wait a minute!

Just read your reply again. You've got typical HSS strat with one vol pot and two tone pots. The tone pots are your TBX mods. The hot path goes from PUs to vol pot then to selector then tone pots? That doesn't seem to make sense to me. If this is correct, you'd have all PUs on all the time and the selector wouldn't be doing anything (selecting PU combinations) because you would only have one wire from the vol pot to the selector and the selector would only be choosing the tone pot?. Seems to me that you would have to go from PUs to selector to vol pot & to jack & TBX tone pots.

Help me out here. I'm basically a LP style guitarist (even though I do have 3 Strats and a Tele). Not a lot of experience wiring Strats.

In rereading my last post, I just want to clarify...

from the PUs to the selector to the vol pot then to the jack. Also from the selector to the TBX tone pots.

Is this not correct?

I would patent this idea because it has potential to evolve into something larger.

I would also quit spamming the forums about it (excluding this thread).

ive messed with the wiring of the tbx pots before and i prefer them without the extra resistance or the treble bypass

To be honest I prefer to tear them out completely in favor of normal 250k pots, but the mod pictured is one I´ve done in the past with good results for the players that wanted it ;)

To put it in New Yorkish: Fuhgeddaboudit, for 2 reasons.

1. Prior examples of this mod have existed since the inception of the TBX circuit almost 20 years ago. That alone is not reason enough not to patent it, but it leads to point 2.
2. Patenting the circuit would have to be so vague that it would essentially have to cover any circuit where low and / or high pass filters are combined with a varistor. I guarantee you that the entire hi-fi, communications and musical industries would fight this patent with a vengeance never before seen, as you´d be trying to steal everybody´s bread in every industry that connects pots to caps and resistors... so just about all of them ;)

I mean, you can try of course, it´s worth a shot, but I would firmly expect the money invested in the patent attempt to be thrown out the window :beerchug:

Like myself, he arrived at the mod by his own methods, but I´m fairly certain I could find a pic on the net somewhere of the same thing or something electrically very similar w/ different cap values ;)

Like my master used to say: Just because you´ve invented a wheel doesn´t mean that somebody else didn´t do so a long time ago :)

To answer Guitar Doc's question...

Yes the TBX pots are in fact the TONE controls, sorry i worded it differently to make it seem like I had TBX controls AND normal tone controls. Instead of two 250k pots for tone i used two TBX pots to get more versatility. And to answer your other question, about the hot path, if you look at a normal HSS strat wiring diagram this is pretty much the same thing just the tone control itself is modded, but everything else is the same. So i guess the hot path would actually be going from the PU's to the selector, to the TBX pots which then would go to the volume pot, AND then the jack. Hope this helpedd.

I have no intentions of patenting this idea at all, I just wanted to help out other guitarists like me who wanted an ALL TERRAIN (so to say) tone control rather than one cap and one pot which only leaves so much versatility. And besides, i thought of this mod by looking at MANY MANY MANY mods out there so it wouldn't be right for me to try to take credit for other people AS well as mine own efforts. This mod is for everyone and anyone who wants to try and use it. =)

Are you postive you have done that EXACT mod or maybe was it something similar to it because i spent hours thinking of that!!

One final thing i would like to add to the mod info is that all capacitors can always be changed to suit your own preferences

The higher the value the more highs will be rolled off
*Ex... 0.047 & higher (0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.08 etc. will be more bassy)*


The lower the value the less highs will be rolled off
*Ex... 0.015 & lower (0.009, 0.008, 0.007, 0.006 etc. will be more treble-y)*
