^ The tone circuit on the input of the volume pot loads the pickup down as you turn the volume down. Its the same effect as having a lower value volume pot.

50's wiring removes that loading, meaning that you have closer to the pure pickup resonant peak coming through at all volumes......however it will darken a little due to the fact that there is a bit of the volume pot resistance track in the signal path increasing load.
But additionally, when you move away from 10 on the tone pot, you can get a different loading on the pickup, such that it almost acts like a separate volume pot in addition to the tone shift.

So no matter what method you use for passive wiring, there are drawbacks.
