Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

I have a Schecter Tempest Special that has Tone Pro bridge & tail piece. I like the idea that you can lock it on the post with an allen wrench & the action can be adjusted with a screwdriver . Tonally its hard for me to tell as the Schecter is a different brand of guitar to anything else I have, but I will say that this guitar rocks. It has a set of Duncan P90 antiquities in it and sounds really good.

There isn't a question that the TP is better than a regular metric piece of junk TOM.

The question is whether the TP is better than a $20 metric Gotoh, given that it is a $20 metric Gotoh with 2 holes.

In my experience: no.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

The Epi spring loaded TOM locks it in place and dosen't need the mini screw things to be removed

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Sustain was markedly better than whatever came on my Epi Dot, but if this was due to better material and construction or the locking part I couldn't say. There was more room to intonate as well.

haven't read the entire thread, but one way to find out if its due to the locking mechanism is to un-screw the locking screws and see if there's a difference

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Yeah, I tried that. Didn't seem to be any difference in sound to my tin ears.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Thanks all for the feedback. Essentially I have had repeat string breakages on my Gibson which I am quite sure is due to the saddles being crudely slotted. I was simply wondering whether going for an upgrade was worth it beyond simply having the tech sort out the existing bridge.

Not a unanimous yes or no either way but the feedback is handy, and the units do seem to be decent quality regardless of whether the locking function on its own does anything extra. One thing that always thought was with any decent enough TOM setup, surely once strung up the tension of the strings would hold all the components in place, and then there would be barely any play in the hardware to be further eliminated. Glad to have input from people who have actually given these things a go. Thanks again!

I used to have TonePros on all my TOM guitars, including my #1. However, TonePros stopped using Gotoh-made TOM bridges a couple years ago and started using cheaper Chinese/Korean-made bridges with the "TonePros" logo cast into the bottom, but never told anyone. I haven't bothered to buy any of their kits since (they were already expensive for what they were...now they're just ridiculously overpriced).

At this point, I'd rather have a cheap brass Wilkinson roller (also locks to the posts) for $15 or a even a plain ol' Gotoh or Schaller TOM for $25-$40.

Also, while I personally prefer the locking design, I must admit that any change in tone or sustain was too small to be noticable.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Eh, maybe I'll just put a Kahler 7200 on everything.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

I just tap the bridge myself if I dont have a TonePros on hand. Same thing, really.

That's the way, right there, if you can do it. I'd have no qualms about doing that mod on anything that's not vintage.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Thanks all for the feedback, plus faber seems interesting. The babicz stuff seems great, although very pricey and as sad as it sounds I would rather have something that looks more 'traditional' looking (for lack of a better phrase) for my gibson semi hollow. Must be honest though, everything considered I am not convinced of the tonal benefits of a Tonepros over a regular schaller/gotoh...or other reputable brand. Seems there is a definite leap over lesser units, but I am not sure how much of that is down to the locking functionality. Seriously thanks all for the feedback as always! Seems like a good unit regardless so won't rule one out 100% right now.

Re: Tone pros TOM's: yay or nay???

Babicz on my 81 LP custom , my 335 custom build and several other guitars including the Strat I just ordered today. Way better engineered bridge that actually instantly improves your sound. That vintage word means nothing to me , a guitar is to be played. If it doesn't work for you the way it is you either upgrade or sell.

I fully get what you mean. If it was for any of my other guitars I would consider something like these. In that way I do like the nothing to sacred approach and I do like some more modern bits of hardware. In the case of my gibson though, I must admit it is me being a bit funny with it.

I only use bridges made from old mastodon bones
