Tone Question..

This question is for those of you who are really TONE specialist!

I play through a fender super reverb(45watts). I usually play in small venues and im always going for a BIG fat sound, but im only able to get my volume around 2-3. Should i get an Attenuator that will allow me to get the amp up to its sweet spot or should i look for a small stack(clean head with a 4x12 cab??? Gospel/blues/jazz.. clean music that needs a big tone for my taste.. Any advice??

The magic of those amps comes from the 4x10 speakers when the volume is between 4 and 7. Anything you do different is going to change that. So how stuck are you on the amp? You could try running it through a single, 12 inch, speaker. That will definitely give you some relief and versatility. It is a lot easier to hide, turn, tilt back, deflect a 12" speaker cab. Something like a Weber Texas, ceramic, 2 ohm perhaps....?

My issue with this is that a Super Reverb into a 1x12 cab isn't a Super Reverb, it's an overgrown Deluxe Reverb and on top of that a 2 ohm 12 is going to be REALLY hard to find!

An attenuator is the best place to start with this...

It will keep MOST of the original tone intact and make the voluem MUCH easier to deal with.

You could also look into something like a THD Yellow Jacket...it'll change the 6L6's for EL84's and lower the wattage from 45 or so to about 18 or so, not a huge change but it might help and depending on the tonal shift it might be worth it.

My question is this...

What are you calling the sweet spot? If you are looking for the nice overdriven SR tone a pedal or 2 might help...

If you're just looking to get a beefier clean tone try a 12AU7 in V6 (phase inverter). It will allow you get a bit deeper into the volume control without blowing the doors off the house.

Good question! A pedal might be the best way to go.. im really not a pedal guy which is why i didnt think of that idea! Not a dirty overdrive, but an od that will still allow me to play chords with clarity...

There are a lot of pedals out there that might fit that bill...I use the CLEAN setting of a King of Tone for those lightly dirty sound that are really clear but still very big however thats not the only choice!
