Re: Tone Wizard vs. You
You all have given me a lot of great ideas and a lot to think about. Thanks. Those remarks about Priest and Maiden were great! I was a Stryper fan and saw them a few years ago in concert and they were great. Now I find myself listening more to Pillar, but really miss the fretboard pyrotechnics a la Lynch and Priest. Glenn Tipton is probably my fav guitarist of all time. I recently read that he didn't pick up the guitar until he was 21! So what's my excuse?! He just turned 62 as well...and still crushing it! I didn't say I don't listen to them anymore...just find myself questioning it sometimes.
Anyway, the guy who wound the pups I have now (Kevin Taylor from GuitarForce pickups - Rebel II PAF neck A3 mag, Full-On Distortion bridge A5 mag...about 16K DC resist) thinks my guitar may be a bit on the dark side and wants to wind me a Rebel I PAF set. I am also considering going with the Erupter (copy of the Duncan 78 EVH) for the bridge. I'm thinking lower output for this guitar would be the way to go and get all the gain/dirt I need from the POD. Even Mark Morton from LOG plays with 59's! I'm considering getting a fixed bridge active pup guitar as my 2nd - like the Ibanez ART 300 LP copy (only $400 new).
I told him to check out the YouTube clip of Paul from GuitarWorld doing the review of the Peavey HP Special CT USA guitar and how those pups sound. I mean, that's also a basswood guitar w/bolt-on neck and trem...and that thing sounds killer! I read somewhere the specs on those and also sent them to him to see if he could copy those. I hope to hear back from him soon about that. Supposedly those specs are as follows:
Bridge: DC=13.4K Res Peak=5.5Khz Mag=A5
Neck: DC=16.72K Res Peak=8Khz Mag=A5
Now, Kevin says he never likes to go above A3 for a neck pup or else it gets too muddy (in his opinion). ??? Lots of pros use A5 neck pups. Whatever. I don't really care what the pups are called or what specs they have...as long as they sound good to my ears.
Thanks again for everyone's input on this. And sorry for the novella! You guys ROCK!!!
