On the Dimarzio website, it says the closest sounding pickups to Ed's Ernie Ball/Axis or Peavey Wolfgang is the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo. How close of a sound are they?
There is no mention of the Wolfgang pickups on the DiMarzio site. They were made by Peavey.
The Tone Zone/Air Norton combo is pretty darn close to the B1/N1 in the Axis. It's really hard to hear the difference unless you play them closely side by side. IMO, the Air Zone is closer to the B1 in the Axis than the Tone Zone and is a perfect match with the Air Norton in the neck.
They're about as close as you're gonna get without buying an Axis or finding the pickups themselves used on eBay.
I know there's no mention of the Wolfgang pickups, but I didn't think there's is not even a difference between those Wolfgangs and the Axis, since I highly doubt Ed wanted a drastic change in the sound. Interesting to hear that the Air Zone is closer to the B1. Thanks!
The Wolfgang pickups are quite different from the Axis pickups. They're harsher to my ears. Never was a fan of them myself. Too hot, IMO.
IMO, the Air Zone is closer. Others may feel otherwise.
I don't know any of the other details. My guess is the winds are different as well. Just between A/B'ing them, those in the Axis are much better, in my opinion. So Erik, the Wolfgangs are much hotter/harsher than the Axis? What's the other differences between the 2?
IIRC, they will drop right in. The key is the mounting tabs. Duncans need to be modified to fit.Not to hijack, but those of you who've tried, are DiMarzio's drop in replacement for the Wolfgang pickups, or do you have to mod the pup?
I believe the Wolfgang pickups were wound hot and had a ceramic magnet.
