Tone zone in a les paul?

Re: Tone zone in a les paul?

The Tone Zone is really dark, really hot, really compressed, and has like no harmonics at all.

It's really good for certain kinds of music, but not mine...

I imagine putting one in an LP would be a real waste of the LP.

ToneZOne is a fantastic pickup. Putting one in a dull dark guitar like an LP is a waste of a ToneZone.

Re: Tone zone in a les paul?

I'm not talking about pinch harmonics and squeely-wheely stuff. You can get that out of any pickup.

I'm talking about natural-order harmonic overtones. The TZ filters all of that.

oh - definitely. I think they are in there, just squished in with all the other noise!

Hot, dark, compressed - those are definites though. It's meant to be loud and fizzy though.

But read what he wanted it for...:smack:

Re: Tone zone in a les paul?

Anyhow I put a jb in the bridge and a 59 in the neck for now. Sounds cool. When I can get some cash together ill probably try to get a set of those wcr fillmore pu's( those things are a little pricey). The guitar also had a Gibson (the original) HB-5 pickup in the neck when I got it, sounded muddy to me, anyone have any info on this pickup?

JB's have a spotty reputation in mahogany, especially LP's. If you start liking it less and less (which happens sometimes), there's PU's with higher success rates in those kind of guitars. But sometimes JB's work out great.

How did you like the Air Zone?

Honestly, it's been like 5 or 6 years since I had one. I remember it sounding pretty good but feeling like it was a little underpowered. But then my tastes have changed quite a bit since then...

Re: Tone zone in a les paul?

I put an Air Zone w/nickel cover in my LP Standard in the bridge. It is awesome and very versatile w/my gear (traynor half stack with 2 jensen mod 12-110's and a jensen mod 15-200 speaker). No duncan or gibson came close.

Cuts through anything and is fat w/no mud.

Sorry the Gibson Humbucker was a HB-R not HB-5. Anyone play these or have any info on them?

IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILAR W/THESE FINE GIBSON HUMBUCKERS (BILL LAWRENCE DESIGNED WHILE EMPLOYED BY GIBSON IN 1988-1989)...CHECK OUT THE BELOW LINKS FOR INFO AND HISTORY...

The Gibson HB-R (neck position) and the HB-L (bridge position) "The Original" Circuit-Board Humbuckers were the result of an exceptional collaboration between Bill Lawrence and Gibson when he re-joined the Gibson team in the late eighties. The HB-R & HB-L pickups are thought by many to combine the low-end aggressiveness of a Bill Lawrence 500-L with the precision of a Gibson Classic '57 Humbucker

Re: Tone zone in a les paul?

From my experiences with both of these pickups in a Les Paul... I find the TZ to be extremely dark, and not as easy to work with the volume knob. You will have to crank your treble knob on the amp. Might not be an issue to you, but I don't like re-EQing the amp when I switch guitars.

I have had really good experiences with the JB in Les Pauls. I know that a few folks on here have not... to each their own. The JB is more dynamic, and responsive to volume knob adjustment- which I like. It is also more open sounding. Where as the TZ is very compressed.

In general, I find that most DiMarzios mask the natural sound of the guitar, giving you the pickup's tone instead. Some people like this.... I don't. I like to enhance the guitar's natural tone with a pickup, not cover it up.

I am more of a Duncan fan, but I have used DiMarzios in several guitars with great tones. I just don't like the TZ in a Les Paul. I wouldn't call it mud, but I would certainly call it darker than I like.
