Tonebone tips - tubes?

Well, been messing a lot with my Hot British (no not the dirctor of the Bond films who was just arrested) my Tonebone HB. Anyhow, the thing is a bit fizzy when cranked. Has anyone changed out the tube with good results? I don't want to invest to much in a tube though any thoughts?

Re: Tonebone tips - tubes?

I don't know about the Tonebone, but I have a Real Tube 901 that I was real frustrated with. I ran across some Harmony Central posts, and discovered you could swap for a lower gain tube. I put in the lowest gain tube, a GT12AU7 and it sorked beautifully. The sound is creamier, less fizzy--more amp like.

I'd drop a not to Radial and ask them what they think. Might be that a simple switch to a different 12AX7, like a JJ or EH, or "Mullard clone" might be just the thing.

I'f be careful about voiding your warranty, though.

Good idea about contacting Radial, I'll do that.

Re: Tonebone tips - tubes?

I replaced the Ruby (Chinese) 12ax7 with a JJ ECC83-S and it smoothed out the shrillness, especially at higher volumes.

I had a HB for a day.....sold it before it even arrived (got a good deal on a FD II MOSFET).

I played it once it came just to make sure it was o.k. & I actually liked it...it wasn't buzzy at all.

Like someone said above though, try a JJ....and if that doesn't work, maybe an ECC82 or ECC81 :dunno:

Good tips on the JJ's, I'm gonna try one.

The Tonebone only gets buzzy when you crank the highs and the contour otherwise you can get some nice settings from it.

Thanks!
