Toneport or something else?

I've been looking at recording interfaces lately and for some reason this skip my mind until now. I did a search and found some postive views on it as well as some clips! This is probably the best thing for me since I don't want to spend a ton of money. I have a few questions though:

I hear that it comes with recording software but you are only limited to 4 tracks. Is it possible to use other software?

I found out that if I run the line out from my Hotplate into an interface I would only need a speaker cab simulator for it to sound right. I was thinking I could just use the speaker models from the toneport. Do you think its safe to run out from the hotplate into the toneport? (I don't want to blow anything up) Or would it be better to run out from the hotplate into a DI box (such as the Behringer Ultra-G with the speaker simulator) and into the mic input?

Would it be possible to connect a drum machine to it? I don't have one, but I'm thinking about getting one.

Re: Toneport or something else?

The way I would do it is use the Toneport as a pre amp and mic your rig. If you don't want to mic your rig then just use the Toneport - I think it might fry using the Hotplates out into the Toneport...or maybe not?
If you're looking to get the sound of your amp try the Palmer speaker simulator.

I had emailed THD yesterday asking if it was possible to run line out into recording interface and they said it is. Either way the toneport does have some cool features, do you think its worth it?

Re: Toneport or something else?

As a general recording interface, I'm rather fond of the Presonus 1394 (assuming that you have a firewire port on your computer). It's safe to run the Hotplate's line out into the interface. As for the Behringer Ultra-G, don't waste your money: IMO it's a hunk-o-junk. The HK Red Box is a much better sim that's quite reasonalbly priced, esp. used on evilBay.

It's safe to run the hotplate into any interface (like the toneport) or just the presonus?

Re: Toneport or something else?

Basically the line out is a weak signal that can be used by any mixer or recording interface, so its pretty safe enough to use on most things. The toneport definitely for recording pretty good. You can use "audacity" its some free recording interface it just doesn't have some of the pretty looking stuff in professional recording programs. It has unlimited tracks I think too. I think recording would sound better with mic plugged into the toneport as suggested before. I tried it from the line output from amp, but I didn't like it so I think using a mic would be best.

The question on connecting a drum machine, yes you can if the drum machine has a 1/4" output jack to connect to the 1/4" line inputs on the toneport.

I would like to mic my amp but I can't play that loud in my house sometimes. I could always use the models that the toneport has anyway. Thanks!

Re: Toneport or something else?

There is a new toneport with midi keyboard on it.Drum programming is not that hard anymore!
I saw this a week or so ago on the line 6 site. Sounds like it has it all! If it's not bad that would actually be perfect for what I'm looking for!! Thanks daemon!
