Tonepros stud inserts/thumbwheel questions

My tonepros stp/tom set just turned up...

It has with it a set of the inserts that the studs screw into and the the thumbwheel adjusters that the tom sits on, with this in mind, will I need to take out the old inserts and thumbwheels?

Is it worth it?

Please give reasons if any...

Re: Tonepros stud inserts/thumbwheel questions

I was wondering about this too. When I installed my Tonepros TOM, I wasn't sure if I needed to replace the studs with the ones Tonepros sent, or if the stock ones were fine. I left the stock ones in and I haven't noticed any problems. I don't think it matters, but maybe someone else knows for sure.

Re: Tonepros stud inserts/thumbwheel questions

OK, the situation has changed...

I'm gonna put the old hardware from my les paul studio on a cheap lp copy, but because it's an import it's metric instead of imperial measurements.

So i'm gonna have to take em out.

How do I do this without damaging my guitar?

Re: Tonepros stud inserts/thumbwheel questions

I'm not sure if they're std. or metric, but I never had to remove the studs on my PRS McCarty. I just screwed the new bolts in, and then screwed the cap into that.

If you're in a situation where you HAVE to remove the studs, it's tricky to do without chipping the finish around it. First, take an exacto knife and score the finish around the stud, meaning cut a circle directly around it, so when you pull it out, it doesn't pull up finish. There's different ways of doing it, but I'd find a bolt at the hardware store that can screw directly into the stud. Then, drill a hole through a 1X2 piece of wood, and slide the bolt through that. Then, screw it into the guitar body. Use the big piece of wood to give you leverage, so you can pull the stud free. Just be careful to not ruin your guitar, and first make sure that the old studs and new ones are the exact same diameter.

I believe Stewart MacDonald makes a tool for removing bridge studs, that might be worth looking into.

Re: Tonepros stud inserts/thumbwheel questions

OK, this is sounding a little tricky...

I may be able to get away with leaving the old inserts, I have studs for the import guitar bridge, so I might be able to do it the easy way.

I don't fancy chipping up the top of my LP (now matter how well I prepare it'd probably still happen)

Thanks!
