Tonewood?

How good is tone wood? I might get my Friend's Epiphone for free, so I'm thinking of possibly upgrading it by taking away it's stock pickup and replacing it with a JB or a Custom.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'm going to use this as a lead guitar in a Pop Punk/Hard Rock band.

When you ask "how good is tone wood", you're asking a question that has no answer.... more specifically, what type of wood is this Epiphone made of? And what is it that you want to know about its tone wood??

How would the tone sound with a guitar made of tonewood(mystery wood?), going through a vox amp? Is it worth upgrading a $$ epi?

If the specs on the site tell it as being "tonewood," it's a very low-end guitar made of some kind of composite wood that really has no tone. Even with a pickup change it won't really be a giggable guitar.

I would say mahogany, or if it's really cheap alder. A JB or Custom should do well in either of those woods. Either pickup will be an improvement over whatever stock pickups are in there now. It would be a good idea to find out what kind of wood you are dealing with though.

there is no such wood as tone wood. All woods used to make guitars are know as tone woods " so at least a decent tone can be produced form it if not a GREAT TONE"

my squier affinity strat is worth £100 new, it had 2 seymour duncans and is one of the best sounding guitars ive ever heard, is that not a gigable guitar also? :burnout:

I guess it could be plywood, but it would still benefit from a pickup change.

The guitar is Epiphone's cheapest model, the LP Junior. But for $89, it has an awesome ebony neck.

I'm pretty sure it's plywood, and I guarantee you the fretboard is NOT ebony. If anything, it's stained rosewood. You deffinately need new pups in there!

why do people say that??? those are 3 great punk bands...they aren't pop punk (well some songs by NOFX could be i guess)...pop punk is the more radio friendly kiddie stuff that the 14yr olds like...blink 182, simple plan etc...they all have a more "poppy" up beat bouncy (for lack of a better term) sound hence the name POP punk...bands like pennywise and bad religion have more of an harder/heavier edge to them with influences from metal bands...
